Horseshoe Bay firefighters develop quick sanitation method

Necessity is the mother of invention, and in the age of COVID-19, the need for sanitation and decontamination is at an all-time high.

Concerns about surfaces that may transmit the virus motivated the firefighters with the Horseshoe Bay Fire Department to get creative with their methods for cleaning equipment. Using examples from other fire departments around the country, the first responders turned a standard oxygen tank into a germ-removing spray gun. …

Firefighters storm old H-E-B building

Demolition of the old Marble Falls H-E-B Store began Wednesday, March 14, but before it went under the wrecking ball, the landmark store since 1966 provided one more service to its community.

It was stormed Monday by 34 local firefighters in practice drills seldom available anywhere.

“I have been in this business 32 years and have never had an opportunity like this,” said Marble Falls Fire Rescue Chief Russell Sander. “It is not just every day firemen can see a sprinkler system activated in a building over 75,000 square feet, perform forcible entry into locked or damaged roll-up doors or breach cinder block walls on an actual building.”

Horseshoe Bay reviews urban deer control

Horseshoe Bay will continue handling its white-tailed deer overpopulation the way it has been, since a study group appointed to look at the matter couldn’t come up with a better alternative.
City council members heard on June 21 that the study group, chaired by City Manager Stan Farmer, met four times beginning in February, to examine ways to reduce the number of deer in the city. The group included Ravelle Kundinger, John Davis and Rick Prekup, though Mayor Steve Jordan also met with them, as did Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. representatives Dale Schmidt and Kevin Schwausch, Lower Colorado River Authority wildlife managers Bill Bergquist and Brandon Smith, veterinarian Dr. Garret Craig, and deer trapper James Bonds, who has the deer removal contract with the city.

Horseshoe Bay commits $4.9 million

The Horseshoe Bay City Council voted Tuesday, May 17, to issue up to $4.9 million in certificates of obligation for improvements to the West Water Plant and acquisition of two new fire engines.
A portion of proceeds from the issuance of the certificates of obligation will be used to fund the project.  Including the $1 million for fire trucks was a financial strategy.
“By issuing certificates of obligation, it is possible for the city to realize a savings in interest expense related to financing the fire engines,” said Larry O. Anderson, finance director, in his introduction.
The water plant project, estimated at $3.9 million has been planned since 2014 to ensure service to Horseshoe Bay West with about 3 million gallons of water per day.   
A completion target of June 15 was delayed for two reasons.
