A door prize at Marta Stafford Fine Art, entitled 'Spirit Rattle,' is the kind of discovery visitors on an evening stroll through Marble Falls Main Street shops and galleries will find at First Friday Art Walk.

Marble Falls will see its first-ever art walk Friday, June 2. The First Friday Art Walk will take place on historic Main Street from 5-8 p.m. to continue through September.

The idea is an opportunity to take an evening stroll through galleries to enjoy their hospitality and refreshments, but in Marble Falls it seems most of downtown was ready to join in.

“Most of the shops in Old Oak Square will be open and other up and down Main Street will be open late,” said Debbie Heatley, who opened Galleries on Pecan Creek in the square in November and now has 28 area artists on exhibit.

Across the way at 318 Main Street, Highland Lakes Art Guild Gallery will be open to exhibit the works of its members.

A mainstay of art, not only from Texas but from all over the country, is Marta Stafford Fine Art at 200 Main Street.

“We will be giving away a door prize,” said Stafford. “The ceramic “Spirit Rattle” by J. Davis of Alpine is a palmful of old school American craft with a sound that helps relax the admirer. Native Americans used rattles to ensure blessing upon their crops. But you could use your own spirit rattle to help bring rain into your life, to rattle your worries away, or (if you insist) just to keep your papers from blowing away.”

The idea of an art walk is not really new. Llano artists host them occasionally on a fourth Friday; Johnson City has a First Friday Art Walk and Bastrop is starting one as well.

“About two weeks ago, my husband and I decided to organize one here,” said Heatley. “We used to live in Fredericksburg and First Friday is a big deal there. Even before that, we participated down in the Valley when we lived in McAllen.”

More First Friday Art Walks are planned for July 7, Aug. 4 and Sept. 1 and each one should be a chance away from the working day or a hectic weekend to explore new works in the galleries and new arrivals in the shops in downtown Marble Falls.
