Marble Falls High School has a new interim head football coach and athletic director.

Mustang Football co-offensive coordinator Michael Birdwell was named to the athletic director and head coach position Thursday, succeeding Matt Green, who will lead to take similar duties at Llano ISD this month.

Coach Birdwell has been an integral part in the successes experienced by the Mustangs over the past three seasons,” said MFISD superintendent Dr. Chris Allen. “With 76 days until the Mustangs’ first scrimmage, Coach Birdwell’s leadership and familiarity with the staff and the skills of our players will provide a smooth transition into the fall seasons for all of our athletic programs.”

During three years in the district, Birdwell has vested himself and his family in the success of student programs in Marble Falls. He was a football coordinator, coached powerlifting and assisted with the coordination of MFISD’s other athletic programs.

Birdwell lives in Marble Falls. His daughters attend Marble Falls Middle School and Marble Falls High School, and his wife, Bethany, is the principal of Highland Lakes Elementary.

Birdwell’s knowledge of the game plan for the upcoming season is built on constant practice of Green’s approach. Prior to Marble Falls, Birdwell coached in Lovejoy ISD with Green. The two also played together in college at Howard Payne.

Green, a Llano resident with three children attending Llano ISD schools, is taking the opportunity to work close to home. Allen indicated MFISD is very appreciative of Green’s contributions to Mustang Athletics and the administration is supportive of his desire to coach in the same place that his kids attend school.

The Mustangs kick off their varsity football season Thursday, August 24, versus Georgetown Eastview. Their first non-district game is Friday, September 1, at Cedar Creek High School.
