“Honey, my water broke. I'm in labor! I'm driving myself to Texarkana!”

That was the first thing my then-wife Selina said to me when I answered the phone at my parents' house in Austin on Sunday, Aug. 22, 1993, and if I panicked at the time, it could be excused. My first biological child was due any minute and I might as well have been on another planet because of how far away she was right then.

As a child, I could not understand how anyone could consider eating anything Rare, Raw, Marinated or Spicy.

A young palate might describe those “adult” cooking features as – Bloody, Bloodier, Slimy or Murder-mouth.

As an adult with a more mature palate, I find myself craving such foods, but all too often my tummy has determined the more exotic the meal the more I need to temper food portions.

Everyone agrees that “everything is bigger in Texas.”

But somehow when we planned our excursion to Colorado, I did not anticipate how much the features of that state could overwhelm a lifelong Texan such as myself.

HCCAC, law enforcement heroes to area children

Article Image Alt Text

Something as simple as taking a moment for a conversation with a child can make a world of difference in that child’s life. Children are special little people and need to be treated as such; they need to know they are important and we as a society need to help them realize this by taking the time to show them how much they mean to us.

I built strong bonds with many children throughout seven years working in the childcare field and learned so much about their little minds in that time.
