First Earth Day Expo in Horseshoe Bay aims to inform, save the planet

The Horseshoe Bay Business Alliance (HSBBA) and Horseshoe Bay Property Owners’ Association (HSB POA) are teaming up on the first Earth Day Expo in the city. The deadline is Friday, April 1, for businesses to show their interest in conservation by registering for a free table at the event.
The Earth Day Expo, which is free and open to the public, will be Friday, April 22 at HSB POA headquarters at Quail Point (107 Twilight, Horseshoe Bay), from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
“The goal is to expand our knowledge base so we can better care for and conserve our resources,” said Elaine Waddill, HSB POA secretary and event coordinator. “We’re excited about it because it’s the beginning of something fresh and new to help meet conservation needs, which are constantly changing.”
Three speakers will talk about separate environmental issues, starting with the keynote speech by Peter Pfeiffer, an expert in green building techniques and architect with Barley Pfeiffer Architecture in Austin, from 10-10:35 a.m.
Luke Furfey of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) will inform residents from 10:45-11 a.m. about recycling programs.
Elias Guerrero, a new retiree in the community who is a horticulturalist with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, will talk about native planting from 11-11:15 a.m.
After the speakers, people can take advantage of information and resources from at least 16 vendors from 11:15-1 p.m. Just a handful scheduled to have booths are:
Pinnacle Water Tanks will show types of rainwater catchment systems; Burnet County AgriLife Extension Service will inform folks about the 40 gallons of water per day challenge; ACE Hardware will display its organic gardening products; Highland Lakes Farmers’ Market representatives will inform folks about organic food and gardening techniques; Condor Document Services will shred documents for a $10 donation per banker’s box; and Tower Gardens/Juice Plus+ will demonstrate aeroponic growing systems.
“I can tell from the emails and phone calls I’m receiving that the excitement is building,” Waddill said. “We’re hoping to lay the foundation and to promote a better quality of life and save the Earth for many generations to come.”
Organizers will have hot dogs, chips and beverages for guests.
