The routine check of a suspicious man on foot led to something of a scramble in the City of Sunrise Beach Village Sunday, July 10, and resulted in five arrests and confiscation of 44 grams of methamphetamine.
Sunrise Beach Police Officer Ruben Saucedo made the stop of the man later identified as 23-year-old Matthew Moss and who claimed to be homeless.
“Officer Saucedo obtained the male's driver's license,” said Police Chief Laurie Brock. “Then the male took the license back … and fled on foot into a heavily wooded area.”
Saucedo gave chase but called in backup when he was unsuccessful in catching up with the man.
“Llano County Sheriff's Department units were able to stop a car coming into the city and learned that the occupants were en route to pick up the suspect that fled,” said a press release from Brock.
She said Moss was found hiding under a bed in a travel trailer in the 200 block of Overstreet Drive.
Brock, Saucedo and Llano deputies confiscated approximately 40 grams of what field tested to be methamphetamine and placed Moss in handcuffs in Saucedo's patrol car.
While officers were searching the trailer, Moss had been placed in handcuffs in the back of Saucedo's patrol vehicle.
“Moss kicked out the window of the patrol vehicle and attempted to escape custody,” said Brock. “He was unsuccessful.”
Finally, with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) also involved, all five suspects were arrested and another four grams of meth was confiscated from one of the occupants of the car that had been stopped.
“The trailer where Moss was found belonged to someone who had just moved here and had offered him a place to stay,” said Brock. “A bad decision.”
She praised the officers involved for vigilance and quick thinking.
“People think of Sunrise Beach as a sleepy place,” she said, “but we take law enforcement seriously.”
Moss was arrested for evading arrest or detention, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (first degree felony), escape and criminal mischief.
Also arrested from the vehicle returning for Moss was Tyler J. Shannon, 18, on charges of possession of a controlled substance (second degree felony) and hindering arrest or apprehension (third degree felony); Drew D. Franklin, 18, for hindering arrest or apprehension; Mark H. Minor, 30 years old and the only Sunrise Beach resident, for hindering arrest or apprehension, and Brian M. Clayton, 34, on an outstanding Burnet County warrant on a traffic ticket for failure to maintain financial responsibility.
Bond amounts set for Moss were $75,000, $2,500, $2,500 and $2,500; for Shannon,  $25,000 and $10,000, and for Franklin and Minor, $10,000 each.
