Meadowlakes withdrawal leaves two local elections

By Glynis Crawford Smith

The Highlander

The City of Meadowlakes has joined the ranks of cities that will not have to hold an election, leaving only Granite Shoals and Bertram with May 5 balloting.

Mike Scott, who had announced he would run against incumbent Mike Barry, withdrawn from the race last week.

Since James Woods had stepped out when Mary Ann Raesener announced her intention to run again, the council make up is settled. Incumbents Reasener, Barry and Jerry Drummond will continue to serve.

Granite Shoals

In Granite Shoals, The Highlander will sponsor a forum for candidates in the two contested races.

The forum will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at the fire hall, 8410 West Ranch to Market Road 1431.

The withdrawal Feb. 22 of Michael Steenbergen from the race for Place 4 on the city council has left Terry Scott and Ryan Wolters to the contest.

Burnet County

Three candidates are seeking the GOP nomination for Precinct 2 commissioner after incumbent Russell Graeter chose not to run again. The field includes, in ballot order, Ryan Rowney, Tom Stephens and Damon Beierle. The winner does not have a Democratic opponent in the fall and will be the newly elected commissioner in January.

There are also three candidates seeking the GOP nod for Precinct 3 JP after incumbent Peggy Shell Simon did not seek re-election. They include Jane Marie Hurst, Carey Headrick and Jeff Sellers. The winner does not have a Democratic opponent in the fall and would be the newly elected JP in January.

The deadline for filings for city and school board elections in Texas is today, Friday, Feb. 17, and, as of Thursday, several contests had developed for the May 6 elections in Burnet County.

The mayors seats in Burnet and Granite Shoals are contested and the Meadowlakes and Highland Haven city councils will be on the ballot.

In cases where none develops, as may be the case in Bertram and Marble Falls, elections will not have to be held.

Marble Falls

In Marble Falls, Mayor John Packer filed for re-election but the other three incumbents, so far, are undeclared. They are Mayor Pro Tem Jane Mare Hurst, Place 2; Rachel Austin-Cook, Place 4 and Rayan Nash, Place 6.

Parks and Recreation Committee Chairman David Rhodes had filed for Place 2 and attorney Megan Klaeger had filed for Place 6.
