The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has ordered the city of Marble Falls to alert all residents today (Oct. 17) to boil water for consumption, following flooding of several neighborhoods due to stormwater runoff making its way into the Highland Lakes from the Llano River in the last 24 hours.

The Marble Falls Police Department Emergency Operations Center (EOC) issued the alert, “Due to conditions which indicate that the potability of the drinking water supply has been compromised as a result of recent flooding.”

Estimates have more than 30,000 Texans seeking emergency shelter as the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey continues, but many are safe and dry in the Texas Hill Country.

Mission Marble Falls at St. Frederick Church geared up for a lunch Tuesday, Aug. 29, to welcome people fleeing the storm.

Ann Sherman and Ron Farmer had traveled from Port Aransas.

“When they said Harvey would come as a Category 1, we were going to stay,” said Sherman. “Then they said Category 3 or maybe 4.

“Ron said we are going. We grabbed our cat, our records, our pictures and we got out in 45 minutes.”

A few people stayed behind and the couple said the news was disheartening.

“The roof is gone and the ceiling is on the floor,” he said.

Two groups of people from Sweeney who had never met were lunching in the St. Frederick dining room.

Highland Lakes residents should keep their cool - a heat advisory was issued for the Highland Lakes area on Tuesday, and more hot weather is expected this week.

The National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio issued a heat advisory for Llano, Burnet, Williamson, Travis, and other Hill Country counties on Tuesday morning, July 5.

The advisory states temperatures will range from 98 to 105 degrees with heat indices of 108 to 112, especially between the hours of noon and 7 p.m.

Texas Tech Chancellor Robert Duncan's recent visit to Marble Falls has revealed just how important the Highland Lakes campus is to the university system. Friday, May 6 was the first time the chancellor had visited the campus at the Frank Fickett Educational Center and he noted that the regional site is definitely “an asset in the Texas Tech System.”

At the Granite Shoals 50th Year Bash, runners began signing in at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 23, and took to the Leo Manazano Hike Bike and Run Trail with its Olympic silver medalist namesake at 9 a.m. By mid-day an estimated 2,000 visitors were coming and going among exhibits, games and musical performances.

The Highland Lakes Elementary School (HLES) Choir performed at opening ceremonies that ended with a 10 a.m. release of hundreds of ballons in the city's signature green and blue colors. Art of HLES student art created the appearance of stained glass in city hall windows.

Let's talk...Women 2 Women is a women's health conference taking place Saturday, March 12, and organizers are asking for a call in advance to reserve a sandwich lunch to round out visits to the event from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

The fun, educational meeting with people who provide services for women throughout this area will include subjects such as heart attack in women, vaccines for adults, incontinence and dealing with abuse and introduce the participants to Use It Or Lose It Exercise, healthy eating habits and how to get the most out of 15-minute meetings with their doctors.
