Marble Falls Area VFD firefighters have battled back a number of wildland brush and roadside grass fires in recent weeks, which have taken a toll on equipment and resources, as the fire danger continues to mount during the height of the summer months.

Triple-digit temperatures, lack of rain, low humidity and dry “overgrown fuels” prompted bans on outdoor burning in Burnet, Llano and Blanco counties.

“Get your PINK on, Marble Falls.”

That is the message from Marble Falls Fire Rescue for a breast cancer awareness event Thursday, Oct. 26.

“Our pink fire truck program escort members of the community affected by breast cancer to the big event at Old Oak Square on Main Street,” Marble Falls Fire Chief Russel Sander said. “We hope everyone will wear ping and join us from 4-6 p.m. for pink cupcakes and cookies and pink lemonade.”

A commemorative photo of what the department wants to be a sea of pink will be taken from atop a ladder truck.

“We are calling on all of Marble Falls to join us,” said Sander.

Local firemen, including members of Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Department have been sporting pink logos on special uniform shirts to promote the event.

Sander told the Marble Falls City Council he expected to see them in the crowd.

Morning rain did a little to dampen the evening crowd this year at the Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Department (MFAVFD) Bull Ride Challenge but about 400 enthusiastic fans did turn out for the benefit.

The department paid out $4,900 in prize money to the top riders among 30 entrants in the event at the Charley Taylor Rodeo Arena in Marble Falls.

Jesse Parker of Pinehurst took the top spot, followed by Cimmaron Rucker of Liberty Hill and Elliott Jacoby of Fredericksburg.

Jacoby is a qualifier in National and Professional Bullriders championships and fourth in ranking, Reid Barker of Comfort, is a National finals qualifier.

Shanel Waggoner of Horseshoe Bay, a 2013 Burnet High School graduate, posted the colors at the opening of the event as Faith Academy graduate London Baileigh sang the National Anthem.

Lue Angell sat under the shade tree in a her flip flops Friday morning, reflecting on 29 years of living in the country on the north shores of Lake Travis.

Angell and her family lost everything they owned Thursday night when their house burned to the ground.

“It started just right outside the door,’’ said Rick Angell, who built everything on site at the 3-acre Lake Lot on Bonnie Lane in Smithwick. “It took no time for the fire to spread.’’

The fire engulfed the main house, a 2,800-square-foot structure, in less than 10 minutes.

No one was injured in the fire. Rick Angell was the only one at the house when it started.

Fire departments from Marble Falls, Spicewood, Granite Shoals, North Lake Travis and Bertram responded.

“It only took four of five minutes for the first truck to get here, but they had only 300 gallons of water,’’ said Marble Falls firefighter George Tennison.
