Lakes area Lions combine roars

Lion Paul Kronbergs, incoming president of the new Spicewood & Highland Lakes Lions Club, receives his Boss Lion hat from outgoing Marble Falls Noon Lions Club President Lion Edna Lowry. Her club, now merged with the Spicewood Lions Club will draw members from 200 square miles of the Highland Lakes area.

Two local clubs of Lions International began roaring together this month.

On July 1, the Marble Falls Noon Lions Club and the Spicewood Lions Club merged to form the Spicewood & Highland Lakes Lions Club.

The merger gives both clubs greater resources to serve the residents of more than 200 square miles now encompassed by the new club.

Stanford finalist for WISD helm

Wade Stanford, assistant superintendent of administrative operations for the Marble Falls Independent School District (MFISD) is poised to become the next superintendent of the Westwood ISD, after a vote Thursday night by that East Texas school board.

During a special called board meeting on July 7, Westwood ISD trustees named Stanford their lone finalist to become their next superintendent. State law will require a 21-day waiting period after a finalist is chosen before the district may formally appoint a superintendent and execute a contract.

Westwood ISD serves 1,700 students in grades pre-K to 12 in Palestine and west central Anderson County. Stanford's contract is expected to be approved July 28 by the Westwood ISD Board of Trustees.

Joining Stanford in Palestine will be his wife, Marla, who is the attendance coordinator at Marble Falls Middle School.

The Marble Falls High School Class of 2016 that graduated Saturday, May 28, earned more than $2.4 million in scholarships.

Among those were the full-tuition scholarship presented to William “Liam” Baskin, the valedictorian, and a coveted and elite National Merit Scholarship Program scholarship earned by Wiley Baskin, the salutatorian.

Falls Career High School held a graduation ceremony for the 25 members of its Class of 2016 on Friday night, May 27, at Marble Falls First Baptist Church.

Ten graduates earned scholarships to continue their education.

Six of those were $1,000 Marble Falls Daybreak Rotary Scholarships and four of them will be used by students headed for Central Texas College (CTC) in the fall. They are Alexia Burrage-Difilicia and Devon Jackson, studying culinary arts; Donald Ervi, with sights set on becoming a writer, and Sara Rutland, to become a teacher.

The Marble Falls High School Class of 2016 raced for the finish line of graduation Saturday night, May 28, before an electrical storm surrounded Mustang Stadium.

The last graduate, Maycie Zurita, received her diploma from MFHS Principal Manny Lunoff as the last parents were evacuated hurriedly from their seats above the stage. The traditional circle on the field for the school song was foregone and graduates tossed their mortarboards on the count of three to follow.

Valedictorian William "Liam" Baskin and Salutatorian Wylie Baskin had time to address their classmates. Kate McAlpin, class historian, remembered the two classmates lost, Bryce Forsythe (July 3, 1997 ~ March 11, 2011) and Mylie Ferguson (Dec. 4, 1997 ~ Jan. 23, 2013) before leading the class in one last "Stang Gang" cheer. Paxton Oberle, class president, was master of ceremonies.

Heroes on the Water honoring vets

Kayaks and fishing gear stand ready for guests of Heroes on the Water event being held at Reveille Peak Ranch. The organization helps vets decompress through clinics on kayaking and fishing. Veterans are admitted free, but all other proceeds of the weekend of good music and good food by the water benefit Heroes on the Water.

MFPD negotiates, defuses armed situation Wednesday

The Marble Falls Police Department (MFPD) throughout the afternoon Wednesday, May 25, successfully intervened in a potentially dangerous situation with a resident armed with a rifle the Pecan Valley neighborhood.

According to Capt. Glen Hanson, public information officer, a call was received by the MFPD reporting a man with a gun in the 1100 block of Mulberry Drive.

MFISD to provide tech to all

Marble Falls Independent School District has embraced technology in a big way and by August, the district will be able to provide assistive technology on a 1-to-1 basis to every student within the district.
The Marble Falls ISD Board of Trustees has approved fair-market-value leasing of Hewlett-Packard touchscreen Chromebooks for middle school students in grades six through eight and Lenovo Yoga touchscreen devices for high school freshmen, said District Executive Director of Technology Robert Keith.

Gallery plans art instruction for young and old

Abstract artist M. Allison Sacra will offer a demonstration Thursday, May 19, and a full-day workshop May 24, both sponsored by Highland Art Guild & Gallery in Marble Falls. Instruction for budding artists is planned in June.

Workshops for young and old are on the upcoming calendar of the Highland Arts Guild & Gallery.
To be offered at their gallery at 318 Main Street, Marble Falls, are: an abstract painting workshop on Tuesday, May 24; the Summer Art Adventure for ages 11-14 years, June 6-10 (registration deadline May 30), and Summer Art Camp for ages 8-12, June 20-24 (registration deadline June 3).
Artist M. Allison Sacra will give a free abstract painting demonstration at Highland Arts Gallery in Marble Falls from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 19, to be followed by her workshop May 24.
Sacra, who is soon to open her own Olio Art Gallery in Horseshoe Bay, is offering the one-day workshop in abstract landscapes for $90.
“I paint in many styles with varying subjects,” said Sacra. “I deem my style as abstract realism. They are fun and splashy, conveying a freeing attitude enticing the viewer to feel the same.
