Dead skunk tests positive for rabies in Meadowlakes

A dead skunk found in Meadowlakes earlier this week by the city's animal control officer tested positive for rabies, the city has reported.

Animal control impounded and submitted two dead skunks, found in separate areas of Meadowlakes, for rabies testing. One tested positive while the other did not. There was no known contact with the rabid skunk.

Should a resident find a wild animal acting out of the ordinary, do not approach it. Instead, please call the Meadowlakes Animal Control at 877-816-8136. Residents are encouraged to be cautious when outdoors, and remember to always vaccinate pets!

For more information about rabies, contact the Texas Department of State Health Services Zoonosis Control Program at 254-778-6744.

This is not the first time this year a rabid skunk was found in Meadowlakes. A similar alert was made in January after a rabid skunk was found on Jan. 20.

Meadowlakes taking orders for memorial tiles

BY GLYNIS CRAWFORD SMITH
THE HIGHLANDER
Meadowlakes residents and their families have the opportunity now to have tiles laid in Meadowlakes Veterans Memorial Park before Memorial Day, April 30.
Since the dedication Feb. 13 of the park developed by the Meadowlakes Property Owners Association, the POA began taking orders for 8X8X2-inch bricks or tiles bearing the name of members of any of the five branches of the U.S. armed forces, with that service branch and motto inscribed.
“The order should go in by April 7 to have the first batch installed by Memorial Day,” said POA President Jo Summers. “The cost is $29. 50 each and that is our cost. The installation work will be provided by our park development program.”
“At least 50 orders have come in,” said POA Assistant Debbie Holley, who receives the requests.

Two city council races develop

City council election filing closed Friday, Feb. 19, and today, Feb. 23, is the last day to declare a write-in candidacy. So far, only Granite Shoals and Cottonwood Shores in south Burnet County report contested seats on their councils.

For a roundup of candidates filing in those cities, Marble Falls, Meadowlakes and Highland Haven, see today's edition of The Highlander.
