Walkway of Lights to end sooner in 2018 but still “magical” after flood-delayed start

The Walkway of Lights in Lakeside Park in Marble Falls will be on a shortened timeline and end on Dec. 26 due to work set to began on the city's parks improvement plan.

Recent flooding issues have failed to deter plans for the Walkway of Lights, however, a Marble Falls city parks improvement project will place the Christmas lighting display on a shorter timeline, officials said.

A Pedernales Electric Cooperative crew began work Nov. 5 on utility installation of the Lakeside Park lighting trail, hosted by the Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber of Commerce.

“We had to wait for the park to dry out a little bit,” said Chamber Events Coordinator Brandi Payne. “Obviously the park was saturated, and that put us off from getting down here (to start erecting the display). There's a little bit of delay, but we're going to make it work.”

The night-time display – which features sculptures, lighted Christmas trees and photo opportunities with Santa Claus – is scheduled from Nov. 16 to Dec. 26.

The city of Marble Falls has erected an approximately 35-foot Christmas tree in Harmony Park at the intersection of Third Street and Main in the downtown historic district. The lighting of the treeat 6 p.m. tonight, Friday, Nov. 22, will coincide with the Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber of commerce Light-up Parade on Main followed by the opening of the 29th Annual Walkway of Lights in Lakeside Park.

Santa returns & Walkway glows through Jan. 1

The Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber of Commerce has dedicated the Walkway of Lights 2017 to volunteers who have provided electrical experience for more than 20 years to the annual display. The Walkway of Lights in Marble Falls is continuing each night from 6-10 p.m. through Jan. 1 with two million lights organized into 400 sculptures in Lakeside Park on Buena Vista Drive.

The long range forecast is clear for today, Wednesday, Dec. 11, with the possibility of showers not expected again Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec 26-27.

Weather permitting, Santa will be there through Christmas Eve, Dec. 21-24.

Visitors can enjoy a cup of hot cocoa with friends and family if there is a chill in the air and store up photos for Christmas memories.

Visitors do need to remember, because this is an outdoor event, if the ground is wet, the Walkway will be closed as a safety measure. For updates on the Walkway's status, call 844-635-4448. For more information, visit walkwayoflightstx.com.

Admission is always free, but donations are welcome and concessions benefit non-profit organizations.

Be part of lighting up the lights in Marble Falls

Just as in this scene from 2016, Santa Claus will make an appearance this Friday, Nov. 17, for the 6 p.m. Marble Falls Light Up Parade and the official opening of the Walkway of Lights.

 

 

 

 

Anyone can become part of the welcome to the brightest holiday event in the Highland Lakes - the 27th annual Walkway of Lights on Lake Marble Falls.

The Christmas Light Up Parade, ending with the opening of the walkway, will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17.

Whether part of a parade entry or just coming out for the fun, Marble Falls Main Street action will be heading for the first night of the lights offered free by members of the Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber of Commerce and the City of Marble Falls. The city will close Main Street from Yett to Sixth Street from about 5:30-7:30 p.m. for parade viewing.

Arrival of the crowds means the recruits to serve as greeters, concession stand workers, photos with Santa Claus helpers and traffic managers need to be in place. More than 50, 000 visitors are expected during 46 nights of lights in Marble Falls Lakeside Park.

NWS cautions rain events east of I-35

In response to possible rain, The City of Granite Shoals has cancelled the Christmas by the Highway lighting ceremony tonight, Friday, Dec. 2. The Walkway of Lights in Marble Falls does not admit visitors when it is raining, but a decision about tonight will not be made until 2:30 p.m. The toll free number for advisories about the Walkway is 844-MFLIGHTS (844-635-4448).

The National Weather Service has issued a warning for along and East of I-35, where area-wide showers may concentrate into 2-5 inches with isolated downpours of more than 6 inches possible.

An upper level low pressure system will move slowly across northern Mexico and Texas today through Monday, with persistent rains expected through the period.

Most of the rain is expected to be light to moderate today through Sunday with some brief heavy downpours of 1 to 2 inches possible Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon. 

The storm system could produce more widespread heavy downpours Sunday night into early Monday as the upper low begins to cross Texas.  Soil moisture conditions are not expected to be conducive to flooding initially, but there is a potential for flooding by Sunday night. Areas generally east of I-35 are expected to see the heaviest rainfall and possible flooding.
