Early voting in the Saturday, May 5, local elections has begun in Burnet and Llano counties and eligible voters will have extended hours to cast their early ballot both this week and next.

Just how far numbers will rise today, Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016 General Election Day, remains to be seen, but so far early voters are breaking records.

“It wouldn’t take much of a record election day to push us to 80 percent turnout overall,” said Elections Administrator Doug Ferguson.

Burnet County citizens flocked to early voting polls, which closed at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, with a record 47 percent of registered voters, 13,885 of them, having voted early in person.

Another 1,686 ballots by mail had been received in the Burnet County Elections Office Monday morning, Nov. 7. That means 15,571 of the county's 29,556 voters had cast early ballots, or 52.68 percent of them.

“Our military mail ballots are coming right in too,” said Karen Peraino of the elections office.

A whopping 22 percent of the 29,556 registered voting population in Burnet County had cast an early vote as of Friday morning, Oct. 28.

“Voting numbers in Burnet County are exploding like everywhere else in the state,” said Burnet County Elections Administrator Doug Ferguson on Thursday afternoon. “Each day we have voted more than any day in past years' elections.”

Turn out at the polls on the first day of voting broke records from previous presidential election years.

“A total of 1,197 voters cast their ballot on Monday, roughly four percent of registered voters in the county.

“It was biggest early voting day that I know of for Burnet County,” he said. “We beat 2008 and 2012 – all those numbers.”

By Tuesday the number of Burnet County early voters had grown by 1,306 to 2,117. The third day's vote was 1,268 and Thursday was set to exceed 1,262.

Early voting in joint primary election runoffs on May 24 starts Monday, May 16. And today, Friday, May 13, is the last day to apply for a ballot by mail.

In Burnet County, where only Republicans filed for local offices, the runoff will decide winners of local offices and only those who voted in the March 1 Republican Primary or those who did not vote March 1 may cast their ballots in the local elections for Precinct 1 commissioner, Precinct 3 commissioner, Precinct 1 justice of the peace and Precinct 4 justice of the peace. Democratic voters locally will choose only between Grady Yarborough and Cody Garrett for a Texas Commissioner of Agriculture candidate.

Today and tomorrow, May 2-3, are the final days for early voting in Burnet County school and municipal Joint Local Elections set for Saturday, May 7.

Voters from any precinct may vote in either location until 7 p.m. today, May 2, and from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. tomorrow at the Burnet County Courthouse at 220 South Pierce Street (on the square) and the Marble Falls South Courthouse Annex, 810 Steve Hawkins Parkway.

Early voting for the May 7 city and school elections begins Monday, April 25 in Burnet and Llano counties. Several different local leadership positions are up for grabs on the ballot.

Voters will decide which of three candidates will get the Place 1 spot on the Marble Falls Independent School District (MFISD) Board of Trustees.
