Bicyclist struck and killed on FM 1431 in Granite Shoals

A 66-year-old Granite Shoals man has died after being struck by a commercial trailer being towed by a pickup on Farm-to-market Road 1431.

The accident happened just after 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3 in the 8400 block of the highway, adjacent to Quarry Park in Granite Shoals.

According to the Granite Shoals police report, both the bicyclist and the pickup driver were traveling eastbound on the south side of the highway.

While riding down the roadway, the cyclist “had been struck by part of the (commercial) trailer,” Granite Shoals Police Capt. Chris Decker said.

“The subject was thrown from his bike,” said Decker adding, the rider was wearing a helmet. “As soon as he (the pickup truck driver) realized what had happened he immediately cut across the highway into the fire department parking lot where he made contact with the fire department and told them that he hit somebody.”

First responders performed CPR on the victim at the scene. He was pronounced dead by Burnet County Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Roxanne Nelson.

“Upon investigation by our officer and with the assistance of DPS troopers, it was determined there's no criminal charges to be filed,” Decker said. “It was a tragic accident.”

The name of the victim is pending notification of family members.

“We at the Granite Shoals Police Department would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased and the driver involved,” Decker said. “We would like to remind those who are pedestrians or bike riders to be very aware of their surroundings as we ask motorists on these heavily traveled roads to please pay attention to how close they are and move over a lane if possible for pedestrians and bike riders.”
