DeLancey indicted

A former Marble Falls Independent School District (MFISD) employee was indicted on six felony charges Aug. 5 in the 424th District Court of Dan Mills.

Deavon DeLancey, 31, of Cottonwood Shores, was arrested by the Burnet County Sheriff’s Department June 5 on charges of aggravated assault of a child and possession of child pornography.

He was indicted by a grand jury on six charges, some of which have more serious penalties than his original two charges. The charges are: three counts of “super aggravated sexual assault on a child,” one count of “indecency with a child through sexual contact,” and two charges of “possession with intent to promote child pornography.”

He has been in the Burnet County Jail on a $1.1 million bond since he was arrested.

'Coach' retires

‘Coach’ Larry Berkman is selling CoachWash, his car cleaning business after ten years.

CoachWash is now Wingman Car Wash, owned by Dustin Wing and John Paige of Wingman Oil Change Center.

“I’ve owned CoachWash since 2004. Wingman wanted to expand their business. They made an offer and I accepted,” Berkman said. “It’s been a great business. We’ve had a lot of good years. It seemed like a good time to move into another arena.”

Berkman co-owned the car wash with Dale Brown and Jeff Bingham.

Berkman, who previously served as a Marble Falls High School coach for 30 years, said he will still be involved with the Marble Falls community including his position on the Marble Falls ISD School Board.

“I’m going to take time off, but I still have something to contribute to the community,” Berkman said. “I’m not ready to go out to pasture yet.”

Berkman said he thinks Wing and Paige will take good care of his business.

Don't fan the fire

Firefighter Kelly Oestreich of Marble Falls Fire Rescue had to make sure the source of a brush fire was cold before firefighters could leave the scene. A landowner’s burn pile got out of control, scorching 2 acres of his property in Mill Creek Wednesday.

First responders urge caution in the coming dry months after several grass fires – one spanning roughly 50 acres – occurred in the past week. The most recent fire took place in Mill Creek on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. While the fire only consumed two acres, it threatened a structure and was dangerously close to igniting a hillside of dead cedar trees, Marble Falls Area Volunteer firefighters said.

Marble Falls bridge closures expected in August

Marble Falls residents may expect short-term bridge closures in August as the US 281 bridge project draws to a close. Texas Department of Transportation Spokesperson Kelli Reyna said there will be nightly lane closures to allow crews to pour the concrete segments until the mid-span is completed. The middle of the span or bridge roadway is scheduled to be completed on Aug. 24.

Bikers Against Child Abuse adopt a local child into the club

Fifty-five bikers from the Bikers Against Child Abuse rode into a Marble Falls park Sunday for a private ceremony in which they adopted a child and supported a grandfather in his mission to rescue his granddaughter from an abusive home. David and his wife were able to legally adopt their granddaughter with the help of BACA, which acted as an intermediary with the state.
