Willard Van Devender of Bertram, Texas, died Feb. 17, 2019, of complications arising from pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Harrison; son, James Willard Van Devender; granddaughter, Jennifer Griffith; a brother, sister, and many nephews, grandnephews and nieces. He was a man of admirable talents and a great friend to many.

“Van” was an avid bridge player and loved to compete in bridge tournaments at the Senior Center in Marble Falls, Texas, where he met his wife, Barbara. Van and Barbara loved to travel around Burnet and Marble Falls playing bridge with several couples in their homes.

He was born Aug. 7, 1957, to Jerry and Aline (Bruce) Morgan in San Angelo, where he grew up and participated in various sports before graduating from Lake View High School. He worked in construction with his Uncle Lyn before beginning his law enforcement career.

Harold W. Smith, 89, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2019. He was born on Nov. 30, 1929, in Sweetwater, Texas, to George Allen and Annie Maye (Costephens) Smith. Harold was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Malcolm Smith. Harold was always very proud of his brother, whose B-24 was shot down while on his 46th bombing mission during World War II.

Although Harold had no surviving relatives, he was loved and supported by a large group of friends and neighbors in Burnet, Texas. Harold was a highly accomplished and respected pilot with more than 60 years and 20,000 hours of flight time that all started in 1939 with a 15-minute ride in a Piper Cub.

She was born in Del Rio, Texas on April 13, 1934 to Ferdinand and Mabel Ehrhardt.

She is survived by her children, Richard T. Burns and his wife Karen of Kingsland, Texas, and Pat Michael Burns of Natalia, Texas; grandchildren, Trisha Burns Perkins and her husband Casey, Ryan Shea Burns, Amanda Burns Adams and her husband Cole, and Jason Rozier and his wife April; great-grandchildren, Caden Seay. Corbin Adams, Jorie Perkins, and Emily, Trishia, Alexa, Rozlin and Kenzlee Rozier.

Arrangements under the care of Jenkins Funeral Home, 109N. Main St Burnet, Texas.

Juanita Wood passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019 in Burnet, Texas, at the age of 94. She was born in Ballinger, Texas, to Earl Collins and Naomi (Davis). Juanita was a resident of Burnet for 34 years since coming from Rosenberg, Texas. She served during World War II in the Navy as a WAVE. She later was a teacher for 27 years. She was a member of the Kingsland Community Church and was a former member of the Square Dance Club.

Johnny Fry, 84, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Feb. 23, at Jenkins Funeral Home, formerly, Edgar Funeral Home, 109 N. Main St., Burnet.

Johnny’s favorite past time was visiting and talking with family, friends and new acquaintances. He also loved fishing, flintknapping, blacksmithing and motorcycles. He worked for many years as a carpenter and mechanic.

Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, John W. and Gladys (Buck) Fry; brother, Warren Fry; sister, Annie Crump; daughters, Dorothy Fry, Kathy Fry and Diane Fry.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Linda Fry; stepsons, Matthew Schmidt and Mark Kerns; sisters, Audrey Dwyer, Emma (Bitsy) Moran; six grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
