First responders from Burnet, Llano, Blanco and Lampasas counties were honored Thursday, Jan. 18, at the 15th annual Hill Country 100 Club awards banquet and meeting at the Galloway-Hammmond YMCA of the Highland Lakes in Burnet.

The year was 1975 and I was in kindergarten. My favorite NFL football team was the Dallas Cowboys and my favorite player, without a doubt, was the quarterback, No. 12, future Hall of Famer Roger Staubach. My family were staunch Cowboys supporters and had been since the team was first formed as an expansion team in 1960. Blankets, pillowcases, toboggan hats, even pajamas — if it was branded with the “star,” I most likely got it from my parents in the 1970s.

An event would happen that year that would have a lasting impact on my friends and me as Cowboy fans. Of course, I am talking about the famous “Hail Mary” pass from Staubach to Drew Pearson to win the NFC Divsional playoffs.

Today, Thursday, June 29, is the last day to purchase a ticket for a ride-along on one of the new Horseshoe Bay fire engines in the city's 4th of July parade.

For the donation of $5 each or $20 for five tickets, you not only get a chance to join the parade in a Horseshoe Bay Fire Rescue truck, you support the Hill Country 100 Club.

A winning ticket is good for space for two adults or an adult and a child, four years or older, with a booster seat and an adult qualified to sign the liability waiver for the ride.

Editor's Note: There was incorrect information published about the Hill Country 100 Club in 'Commissioners honor responders' story, published in the Tuesday, June 13 edition of The Highlander. Membership is not limited to 100 people and yearly memberships have several levels of sponsorship available for businesses and individuals. The scholarship information was also incorrect. The corrected story follows.

Individual first responders from four counties were in the spotlight Jan. 19 for the 14th Annual Hill Country 100 Club Awards Banquet.

More than 400 club members and guests gathered with honorees from Burnet, Llano, Blanco and Lampasas counties at Lakeside Pavilion in Marble Falls.

District 20 Rep. Terry M. Wilson was guest speaker and presenter for the individual first responder awards.

Past Chairman Robert Dahlstrom and Amy Everitt were singled out for their contributions to the Hill Country 100 Club, which not only supports law enforcement units, but their injured members and survivors of those who lose their lives in the line of duty.
