Playing 36 holes of golf in a day can be physically taxing, but a local golf pro is planning to play 108 holes in one day — equivalent of six rounds of gold — for a good cause.

Gary D. Parsons, head golf professional at Horseshoe Bay Resort’s Cap Rock Golf Facility, will play 108 holes of golf July 31 to raise money for the Southern Texas PGA Foundation and its programs.

Parsons, a former editor of The Highlander. selected Marble Falls’ St. Frederick Baptist Church Meals Program as his charity to receive 30 percent of proceeds raised during the event.

“I’m looking forward to doing this again. This will be my sixth year to participate in the STPGA fundraiser,” Parsons said. “This event gives me an opportunity to continue my support of local charities and the good work St. Fredericks does for the Marble Falls community.”

Horseshoe Bay citizens who are interested in running for the Horseshoe Bay City Council began to file for a place on the ballot on July 22.

Up for grabs this year are the mayor position currently held by Steve Jordan and City Council slots currently held by Cynthia Clinesmith and Reagan Lambert. The municipal election is scheduled for Nov. 7.

Candidates may file an application for a place on the ballot for either the mayor or council member place; applications from the same candidate cannot be filed for both the mayor and council member places.

Volunteers are a big focus in cities this summer.

In Cottonwood Shores and Granite Shoals nominations are sought for outstanding citizens and cities are about to appoint new members to committees, boards, commissions and advisory groups.

Wednesday, July 19, is the deadline for nominations for the Outstanding Citizen of the Year in Cottonwood Shores to be presented at the Aug. 3 meeting of the city council. Carlos Naumann was honored last year for continued efforts to keep the city beautiful.

Nominations for 2017, with an explanation of why the citizen is being nominated, are to be submitted to City Administrator Sheila Moore at city hall, 3808 Cottonwood Drive, or by email, city.admin@cottonwoodshores.org. For more information, call Moore at 830-693-3830.

Today, Thursday, June 29, is the last day to purchase a ticket for a ride-along on one of the new Horseshoe Bay fire engines in the city's 4th of July parade.

For the donation of $5 each or $20 for five tickets, you not only get a chance to join the parade in a Horseshoe Bay Fire Rescue truck, you support the Hill Country 100 Club.

A winning ticket is good for space for two adults or an adult and a child, four years or older, with a booster seat and an adult qualified to sign the liability waiver for the ride.

Occupants of a boat that caught fire on Lake LBJ Friday afternoon, June 9, escaped without injury but their craft was a total loss.

The first call about the fire came in to the Horseshoe Bay Police Department about 3 p.m. Friday and most of the fire departments in the area responded with mutual aid to the fire that was within the call area of the Cottonwood Shores Volunteer Fire Department.

“The occupants of the boat we're not able to extinguish the fast moving fire on board,” said a Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) spokesperson. “They had to put on lifejackets and jump out of the boat to safety.”

“The occupants of the boat were transported by a bystander to the Lake LBJ Marina where Cottonwood VFD and Marble Falls Area EMS evaluated them for injuries,” said Fire Chief Joe Morris of Horseshoe Bay Fire Rescue.

The premier live performance of a new song by Thom Shepherd and Coley McCabe will take place in Horseshoe Bay on Saturday, June 17, for a good reason.

It was inspired by Living Love Animal Shelter here in Burnet County and June 17 is the date of the Forever Home Challenge, a benefit for the shelter at Horseshoe Bay Resort.

Morning activities from 9 a.m.-noon will include the Living Love Tennis Challenge and the Putting4Paws Whitewater Putting Challenge. Then, from 6-9 p.m., a concert and fajita party will take place at the Horseshoe Bay Yacht Club.

Music will start at 7 p.m., featuring Shepherd and McCabe and concluding with the performance of their new single release, “Forever Home.”

Spike Dykes, the legendary Texas Tech University coach who was known for the one-liners, died early Monday of an apparent heart attack. He was 79.

“It’s a huge loss,’’ said Susan Bellard, a friend and wife of coach Emory Bellard. “This was going to be the last tournament.’’

Dykes, who has lived the Horseshoe Bay for almost two decades, had teamed with Bellard to start the Kids Care-A-Van Classic.

The annual golf tournament and tailgate party raises money to provide heath care for needy kids in the Highland Lakes.

More than 80 Highland Lakes area women gathered Tuesday, Jan. 24, for "Soup's On," the annual soup pot luck luncheon and business meeting of the St. Paul Catholic Church Women Working in Communion and Spirit (WWWICS).

The Finn Family Life Center of the Horseshoe Bay Parish was a colorful scene, with the settings for each table for eight provided by individual WWICS members. In addition to table settings, attendees enjoyed 16 different soups and a variety of breads and desserts provided by WWICS members.

Co-chairwomen of the event were Carolyn Richmond and Jo Doherty. Pan Wenzel and Diane Snyder are president and vice president of the organization, respectively.

On Jan. 21 at 2 p.m., the Texas Ranger Association Foundation (TRAF), in conjunction with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the City of Horseshoe Bay are holding a ceremony commemorating the 30th anniversary since the death of Texas Ranger Stan Guffey who was killed in the line of duty while rescuing a two-year-old kidnapping victim in Horseshoe Bay.

Ron Lynn Mitchell, vice chairman, president and CEO of Horseshoe Bay Resort, has been awarded the Texas State University Distinguished Alumni Award.

The Distinguished Alumni Award is the most prestigious honor bestowed by Texas State University and the Texas State University Alumni Association. The award recognizes graduates who have achieved prominence and distinction in their chosen business, profession or life work on a national or international level.

The first Distinguished Alumni Award was presented in 1959 to Lyndon B. Johnson. Johnson later served as the 36th president of the United States.

Mitchell, an Austin native, is embarking on his 42nd year of involvement in the development of Horseshoe Bay Resort. He has been a leader in the company overseeing its vision, growth and development almost since its conception.
