The Marble Falls Lady Mustangs opened their 2019-2020 season with a come-from-behind 54-48 victory over Manor on Friday night at Max Copeland Gym.

The home team Mustangs trailed for the majority of the game but took the lead late in the fourth quarter with clutch plays.

It wasn't the best showing for the Lady Mustangs, said Head Coach John Berkman, but a win like this is a great way to start a season.

Coming off a playoff berth as the fourth-seed last season, the Marble Falls Lady Mustangs basketball team is returning nine players and looking to move further into the postseason.

Among the returning players on this year's team are seven seniors resulting in one of the most experienced squads in the tenure of Head Coach John Berkman.

The team did, however, lose valuable inside height to graduation last year. Only one of the team's three primary bigs – Daijah Torns – returns this season, and it has forced the coaching staff to change the team's play style from the inside-out focus of last year.

The Marble Falls High School Mustangs' offense had trouble finding any sort of success against a tough defense from Pflugerville Weiss in a 28-0 loss at home on Senior Night.

Mustangs fans learned one thing on Friday night: Weiss is a very good team.

The Mustangs (1-8, 1-5) posted only 120 yards of total offense – 91 yards rushing – in their final home game of the season. Through nine games, the Wolves (8-1, 6-0) have allowed only 89 points all season.

Marble Falls cross country head coach Chris Schrader's approach to training may be unorthodox to some, but the results are hard to argue.

The Mustangs boys team qualified for the UIL 5A State cross country meet with a fourth-place finish at Regionals on Oct. 28 in Corpus Christi; two individual girls runners – Ambrie Lizcano and Bailey Goggans – also punched their ticket to the State meet.

The Mustangs had only three runners qualify for the final meet last season – Goggans, Jaden Johnson and Bryer Atkinson. The team has seen improvement across the board this season under Schrader.

The Marble Falls Mustangs defense couldn't keep up with the Glenn Grizzlies' offense in a 35-22 loss in Leander on Friday.

The Mustangs (1-7, 1-4) scored on their opening possession of each half but failed to continue the success throughout the game.

The first three minutes of the game couldn't have gone better for the visiting team. The Grizzlies (5-3, 4-1) were forced to punt – a net-negative-yardage shank – that gave the Mustangs the ball near midfield.

Senior running back Hayden Wells capped off the short drive with a 17-yard touchdown run to give the Mustangs an early 7-0 lead.

In the final home game of the season, the Marble Falls Lady Mustangs volleyball team fell to Pflugerville Weiss by a score of 3-1 after Senior Night celebrations.

Although the outcome wasn't exactly what the team wanted, Lady Mustangs Head Coach Tanya Powers was pleased with the girls' performance and energy.

“It was Senior Night so I put my seniors out there, and, for the most part, they wanted it,” she said. “I'm not that disappointed. They're going to remember this game in a positive way.”

The Mustangs (1-6, 1-3) entered the final quarter with a 39-21 lead and scored in the first two minutes to extend the lead to 24 points.

“Our kids have a growing belief in what we're doing and themselves,” Mustangs Head Coach Brian Herman said. “The kids are busting their tails in practice, and they keep fighting . . . We exploded onto the scene tonight, and I'm proud of them for that.”

The Marble Falls Mustangs' (0-6, 0-3) defense allowed touchdowns on the first three drives in a 41-13 loss against Brenham on the road on Friday, Oct. 11.

Mustangs Head Coach Brian Herman summed up the difference in the game in one word: “speed.”

The Cubs' (5-1, 3-0) speed advantage was shown in the quarterback scramble, halfback sweep to outside and play action pass that all went for scores.

The Mustangs return home this week to face the Bastrop Bears (3-3, 0-3) at Mustang Stadium for Max Copeland Night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
