Severe weather risk this afternoon, evening

The Hill Country, including Burnet and Llano counties, is at risk for some severe storms this afternoon and evening. As you can see on the attached map, this includes areas across the eastern Hill Countgry as well as along and east of I-35, including Austin and San Antonio.

Threats include hail up to 2 inches in diameter as well as wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph and rainfall of between half an inch to 2 inches. Isolated pockets east of I-35 could see up to 4 inches of rain and an isolated tornado or two is possible.

Isolated to scattered showers will develop this morning with scattered thunderstorms developing in the afternoon and evening. Environmental conditions are favorable for some storms to become strong to severe and the severe threat may diminish after midnight.

Burnet County Judge James Oakley of Spicewood and Carlos Palasciano described their respective visions about the future of the Pedernales Electric Cooperative during a Thursday evening forum in Johnson City.
The two men are candidates for the District 5 place on the board currently held by Oakley, who also serves as the board president. PEC hosted a forum for the candidates at their cooperative headquarters.

A National Weather Service Flash Flood Watch continues for most of South Central Texas from 10 a.m. Sunday to 10 a.m. Tuesday.
All of South Central Texas is included, with the heaviest rainfall expected primarily along and east of U.S. 281 and along and north of Interstate 10. This still includes both the San Antonio and Austin metro areas.
Over the next 48 hours and widespread, 3-6 inches of rain are expected over most of South Central Texas with isolated amounts of 8-12 inches mainly east of U.S. 281 and north of Interstate 10. 
Flash floods and river flooding remain the primary concern. Rising levels on rivers, creeks, and streams and increasing soil moisture levels will continue to increase this threat over the 48 hour period ending Tuesday morning.

WOW High Tea Fashion Show benefits transplant fund

The community is rallying around Darlene Sanders, whos wait for a kidney transplant predates her arrival in the Highland Lakes with the Smoking for Jesus Ministry (SJM) as they fled Hurricane Katrina in 2005. She still is part of the congregation that has found anew home between Burnet and Kingsland in Burnet County. A fashion show Saturday, April 2, will contribute to a fund for her.

A Women of Wisdom (WOW) High Tea Fashion Show at Marble Falls First United Methodist Church, 1101 Bluebonnet Drive, this Saturday, April 2, will be an event about style with a serious goal.

It will be sponsored from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. by the WOW women's group of Smoking for Jesus Miistry (SJM) to benefit the South-Central Kidney Transplant Fund and local resident Darlene Sanders.

Prescription medications will be the St. Patrick's Day topic at the meeting of Burnet County Democrats Thursday, March 17, at 6 p.m. at Trailblazer Grille, 216 South Main Street on the Burnet Courthouse Square.

The featured speaker will be Daniel E. Garcia, Pharm. D., a former compliance officer for the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.

He will discuss five major points regarding prescription medication costs: Capitalism and its effects on costs, the cost of new prescription medications and whether they are more effective, costs to American consumers compared to other countries and legal remedies to high cost medications.

Visit Fort Croghan over Spring Break

Although re-enactments are not part of the fun of a Spring Break visit to Fort Croghan Grounds and Museum, the historic surroundings call to mind life in 19th Century Burnet County.

Although Burnet's most popular historic site is officially closed for the winter season, Fort Croghan Grounds and Museum will be open Friday, March 12, and from March 14-19.

Author W.C. Jameson will discuss the latest edition in his Beyond the Grave Series: "Amelia Earhart: Beyond the Grave," tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Herman Brown Free Library, 100 East Washington Street in Burnet. 
Jameson, who lives in Llano, is the award-winning author of more than 90 books, 1,500 articles and essays, 320 songs and dozens of published poems. Other books in the Beyond the Grave series examine the lives of Billy the Kid, John Wilkes Booth and Butch Cassidy. His Buried Treasures of America series numbers 36 books and counting. Jameson a top-selling treasure author in the U.S. and his prominence as a professional fortune hunter led to stints as a consultant for the "Unsolved Mysteries" television show and the Travel Channel. He served as an advisor for the film "National Treasure," starring Nicolas Cage.
