When the announcement came that contract negotiations for LakeFest 2018 had fallen through, speculation was rampant.

The announcements from the Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber and the City of Marble Falls were straightforward: “It boiled down to being a business decision.”

That didn't stop people wondering if it boiled down to city parks and recreation construction and related boat ramp changes or the development of the hotel conference center.

For an answer, we turned to Ken Dollar of Meadowlakes, the face of the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Races from 2009 until the first of 2018.

“Development never came into the picture,” he said. “I want to get that across.”

“It was a simple thing,” he continued. “Last year the Lucas corporation people decided it was time to take a look and restructure, not just drag boats, but all their motor sports series; and they own several.

Justin Hawkins, a 12-year-old student at Marble Falls Middle School, says goodbye to his thick mane of hair. After someone made a $100 donation, he decided to have his head shaved Saturday at Marble Falls Johnson Park during the fundraiser for St. Baldrick's Foundation, which seeks cures for childhood cancer. Stylist Becky Turner donated her time for the event.

Normally, the weekends at Johnson Park bring the sounds of people enjoying Lake Marble Falls, whether it's fishing, boating or swimming.

Things will be different Saturday, March 3 as a “buzz” will be heard as people will get their heads shaved. From noon to 3 p.m. at Johnson Park at 230 South Avenue J, the park will host a St. Baldrick's Event.

Those participating in this event will be making donations and getting their heads shaved to join the fight against childhood cancers and promote funding for childhood cancer research. Since children often lose their hair when getting cancer treatment such as chemotherapy, this head shaving fundraiser is a way fo showing support.

The event's goal is to raise $20,000, and so far, $5,460 has been raised.

Both men and women are expected to participate in this event, along with a certain member of the Highlander news staff.

Community leaders let their hair down for the 59th Annual Awards Banquet, themed “Get Down, Turn Around, Go to Town, Brew Scootin' Boogie!”

The event was a sell out and the Cadillac Dance Hall delivered with the music of Eddie Shell and the Not Guilties and their lead singer Bode Barker.

But the casual atmosphere and a banquet of barbecue did not diminish the pride the chamber took in recognizing the contributions of award winners, including Outstanding Citizen Guy Taylor and Lifetime Achievement Award winners Raymond and Tammy Cochran Whitman.

The Excellence in Public Service Award was presented to the Highland Lakes Pregnancy Resource Center of Marble Falls and Kingsland. Clay Cauble was named Innovator of the Year and Jeff Bingham, Ambassador of the Year.

Article Image Alt Text

Scenes like this one of check for LakeFest 2017 in at Marble Falls Johnson Park will not be repeated this year.

The Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber of Commerce received notice last week that Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series would be proposing substantial contractual changes for the 2018 LakeFest event.

For that reason, Lucas Oil will not be sanctioning drag boat races on Lake Marble Falls in 2018.

During the negotiations that followed, Lucas Oil and the Chamber were unable to reach an agreement.

“We were aware of the process Lucas Oil began last year with regards to restructuring their drag boat series, but we were hopeful we would be able to continue this long-standing relationship and keep LakeFest a viable option for Lucas. It boiled down to being a business decision,” said Patti Zinsmeyer, Executive Director.
