A representative of the Tobyville Community northwest of Marble Falls attended the Marble Falls City Council meeting Tuesday night, Oct. 3, to make it clear that health and economic threats from rock and gravel mining and processing are not limited to the southern borders of the city.

The window of opportunity for comments on an air quality permit application from Collier Materials, Inc. for the Tobyville area is more narrow as for the Asphalt, Inc. permit being considered near Baylor Scott & White Hospital.

A public information and comment meeting on Collier Materials, Inc.'s Proposed New Air Quality Permit No. 146397L001 will be conducted by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24 at Holiday Inn Express, 714 Corazone Drive, in Marble Falls. Comments are due by that day.

A former Marble Falls mine safety engineer has warned members of a group fighting a proposed rock crushing plant of the dangers of “fugitive dusts” that will escape the facility if an air quality permit is approved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, stating the plant should have been required to perform “air dispersion modeling” due to the proximity of Baylor Scott & White Marble Falls hospital.

Dixie Land jazz will fill the air in the first four blocks of Marble Falls Main Street as Saturday, Oct. 7, as visitors stroll through best in the classics—cars that is.

It is the day from the 16th Annual Main Street Car Show, put on from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. by the Marble Falls Kiwanis Club.

“Antique cars, new cars, sports cars, pick-ups, hot rods, you name it--we are expecting a wide variety of cars from all over Central Texas,” said Jack D. Sargent, event coordinator. “We invite you to register your own entry or just to mark your calendar and plan to spend some time on Main Street.”

Businesses will be open for shopping and car owners will be on hand to discuss their pride and joy entries in the contest as the live band performs.

The 20th Anniversary Celebration of Marble Falls Library at 101 Main Street concludes with a communtiy-wide event--The Big Day--Friday, Oct. 6.

The Big Day, including a performance by the Hill Country Community Band, under the direction of Bo Boshears, will begin a 2 p.m. Friday.

Charles Hundley, former superintendent of the Marble Falls Independent School District, is the featured speaker, but he will not be alone in 20th-year recognition. Area judges and elected officials are expected, as well as, Jerome Rugen of Delineations Inc. to comment on new library renovations.

The entire week is sponsored by Friends of the Marble Falls Library, the nonprofit organization that sponsored the fund drives and man the thrift store that built the old 4th Street Library and the new, and now improved, 101 Main Street facility.

The 20th Anniversary celebration of the Marble Falls Public Library at its 101 Main Street Home is underway and the big finale is Friday.

The 69 years of the institution's history, the new library, its programs and latest renovations all are being showcased through Friday, Oct. 6, when “The Big Day” arrives, a community-wide celebration.

Children's Day, Monday, Oct. 2, began festivities with special programs for tots and school kids, featuring a magic shows with Lollipop the Clown.

For Librarians Day today, Tuesday, Oct. 3, librarians current and past will be treated to a luncheon. A tea is planned for all the volunteers and staff of the Marble Falls Library Thrift Store.

Author's Day on Thursday, Oct. 4, will fill the library with favorite Texas authors, there to meet readers and sign their books. A silent auction will be going on as well.

The annual fall fish fry fundraiser for the Marble Falls Area Emergency Medical Service (MFAEMS) will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Blue Bonnet Cafe.

Twice a year for at least the last 25 years, owners of the historic eatery at 211 US 281 have opened their doors and their kitchen to supporters of the local EMS.

For $10 per adult and $4 per child younger than 5, fried fish and the fixings are available inside the restaurant or for take out. For orders to go, call 830-693-2444.

Staff of the EMS, local first responders and elected officials volunteer their time to wait tables and help keep food moving along. All profits are directed to the training and equipment needs of the MFAEMS.

Former NASA astronaut Capt. Dan Bursch knows how important science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is for the next generation and is glad to see events like the Hill Country Space Expo bringing exhibits and artifacts to kids.

“I think the most important thing for kids right now is getting them interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” Bursch said. “Events like these are dealing with real people, real hardware and real stories.

Readers who love to know their favorite authors will get the chance during the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Marble Falls Library at its 101 Main Street Home, going on Monday-Friday, Oct. 2-6.

Wednesday is Authors Day, and an even dozen Central Texas writers will be in Marble Falls to chat with patrons, sign and sell copies of their books from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Authors are scheduled in three groups:

• 10 a.m.-noon—Ben Rehder, Helen Fanick, Monte Akers and Ed Mapel

• 1-3 p.m.--Dennis Blocker, WC Jameson, Marcia Kaylakie, Susan Rogers Cooper

• 3-5 p.m.--Jane Knapik, Donna Ingham, Dennis Blocker, Karen MacInerney

Historians like Knapik and Akers are balanced by cultural investigators like Jameson and Ingham and mystery writers readers love such as Susan Rogers and Helen Fanick.

National Night Out (NNO) will be celebrated in Marble Falls and Granite Shoals on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

The annual community-building campaign promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.

Locally that national goal is taken up a notch with other first responders taking part in the night of family fun.

The Marble Falls Police Department (MFPD) will conduct their event from 5-7 p.m. on the 200 block of Main Street where the police station is located.

Vendors and sidewalk sales will be found on the street, but also free food, music, bounce houses for kids and more. It is a chance families and neighbors to visit with first responders in a casual setting.
