Pokémon Go comes to town

Article Image Alt Text

By Rachel Cohn
HLN Correspondent
On Sept. 28, 1998, a little-known pair of games called Pokémon Red and Blue were released in the United States after seeing commercial success in their home country of Japan. And from there, the game series took the U.S. by storm, from currency for school children of the late 1990s as a card game to a popular, long running cartoon spawning 19 movies. One could be forgiven for not thinking Pokémon could be caught in the real world.
On July 6, 2016 — two years after a Google April Fool’s Joke based on the same concept — Pokémon Go released on Apple Store and Google Play to worldwide success. In this GPS-based mobile game, players create their own trainer avatars and pick from a choice of three Pokémon: Charmander, Bulbasaur and Squirtle.

Country Cuzzins, a Highland Lakes area square dance club, will hold its annual Fiesta Dance Saturday, Aug. 6 at the Boys & Girls Club of the Highland Lakes, 1701 Broadway Street, in Marble Falls.
“It is a great night for all our members,” said square dancer Charlie Taylor. “But everyone is welcome. It is a good chance for someone who is interested to see what it's all about. We have a lot of fun.”
Taylor and his partner in the square Rita Baier are just back from the National Square Dance Association event in Des Moins, Iowa, June 23-26.
“Square dancers do a lot of traveling and we meet new people all the time,” said Taylor. “In DesMoins there were 4,000 dancers from 15 countries, all there to square dance. The floor was huge—eight people in a square and 80 squares at a time.

The Campus Carry Law (Texas Senate Bill 11) went into effect Monday, Aug. 1, and colleges and universities across the state posted the new advisory allowing concealed handguns on campus, including the Texas Tech University (TTU) and Central Texas College (CTC) campus in Marble Falls.

By coincidence, that day fell on the 50th anniversary of the 1966 University of Texas (UT) Main Building Tower shootings. What is widely considered the nation's introduction to mass murder, or campus shootings at the least, was witnessed in part by Marble Falls High School graduates, attending summer classes or orientation on campus. And, the city like others across the nation were riveted to the reports from KTBC by the young Neal Spelce and Gordon Smith and mourned with news director Paul Bolton when his grandson's name was found among the 13 who died after Charles Whitman found is mark in 43 people shot on the campus mall.

By the year 2025, Marble Falls Independent School District enrollment may have grown seven to 10 percent, according to a study performed by a College Station demographics firm.
To determine the district's capacity to handle this anticipated growth, the Board of Trustees voted at the Tuesday, July 19, regular board meeting to contract with Alpha Facilities Solutions to perform a Facilities Condition Assessment to evaluate the condition of the district's current facilities and to create a comprehensive plan to address needs as well as routine maintenance for the short and long term.
Superintendent Dr. Chris Allen said the purpose of the study by Population and Survey Analysts (PASA) was to anticipate and plan for future student needs that may result from enrollment growth.

No one had to order out for lunch at Marble Falls Police Department (MFPD) Headquarters Monday, July 18, thanks to a Fearless Blue recognition cooked up by members of Hillside Bible Study at Marble Falls First United Methodist Church and the Ridge Readers reading circle.

“We were driving home from Sunday school and we passed the police station and one of us said, 'We ought to do something for them,” said Yvonne Kyler in a small presentation ceremony. “Everyone wanted to be part of it.”

By noon Monday, a gift basket, bouquet of roses and a table loaded with sandwiches and goodies for lunch had been assembled for delivery to MFPD.

The group was headed back to the church for a prayer service for all the victims of violence against law enforcement and for the safety of all who serve.
