The American Cancer Society will hold its inaugural Hill Country Golf Classic at Hidden Falls Golf Course in Meadowlakes Saturday, Oct. 28.

“Not only will you have fun and enjoy the health benefits of an exciting round of golf, but you'll also support the American Cancer Society's (ACS) efforts to save lives by helping people stay and get well,” said Jayne Palmer of the ACS.

Tournament check-in and purchase of mulligans will begin at 10 a.m. before the shot-gun start at 11 a.m.

Cost for the four-man scramble is $75 per person. Mulligans are five for $20. Tribute roses will be available in memory of a loved one who lost the battle against cancer or in tribute to a survivor. The bouquet created will be the centerpiece at a taco meal served to golfers after the tournament.

A hole-in-one on hole 6 will win a choice of vacations for four to San Francisco and Sonoma, Palm Springs golfing, a New York City Broadway experience or to Miami Turnberry Isles.

Hurricane Katrina brought him and his family from New Orleans to Marble Falls, where he played football for the Mustangs as an offensive guard and graduated from high school in 2011.

He started for three years, including his senior year, when the Mustangs averaged 27 points per game.

And now, following a collegiate career at the University of North Texas and then a brief professional football career, Cyril Lemon has returned to Marble Falls High School.

His first day in his new career as a coach began July 31. Lemon will serve as defensive line coach in football, assistant coach in girls basketball and shot put and discus coach in track and field.

“I was looking for a coaching job,” said Lemon, 24. “This came up and it was a great opportunity to come back and help out with the community and with the kids. It’s cool just being back and seeing the field I used to play on and being in the same building.”

‘Meet the Mustangs’ event to be Aug. 23 at Mustang Stadium

Mustang fans who want to renew their season tickets for Marble Falls High School football can pick up their tickets, with payment, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, July 31, to Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Marble Falls Independent School District Athletic Office at 2101 Mustang Drive.

The office is on the MFHS campus next to the Max Copeland Gym.

For mailed-in payments, tickets will be available for pick up 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday, from July 31-Aug. 16.

The price for Mustang reserved seat season football tickets is the same as in previous years: $45 per seat for all five home games, $15 for employees and $10 for ages 65 and over.

Highland Lakes Newspapers Publisher Frank Shubert announced this week the addition of Richard Zowie as a staff writer.

Zowie will be the sports editor for The Highlander, covering Marble Falls and Faith Academy sports, but will also take an active role in on the news side, covering Marble Falls ISD for The Highlander as well as general assignments. He also will utilize his layout and design talents to the production side of the newspaper.

"Richard has hit the ground running and has already made significant contributions to The Highlander,” Shubert said. “We are excited to have his talents and energy working for the communities we serve and look forward what's coming next!"

Last year, the Marble Falls Athletic Booster Club made approximately $30,000 and members hope to continue to grow that amount every year.

The club is in the middle of its membership drive and is encouraging local residents to join to support Mustang Athletics.

“We’re working to make it affordable to people,” said Cindy Friddrichs, the club’s media coordinator.

The memberships include the following packages: Family ($25), Mustang ($50), Bronze ($150), Silver ($300), Gold ($575) and Platinum $1,000). Bronze and above come with two general admission passes to all Marble Falls Independent School District athletic events, while the pricier ones include various special recognitions.

“The money goes to all our sports, not just to football,” Friddrichs said. “We assist with other sports, such as power lifting, cross country, soccer and tennis. We have around 14 sports we contribute to all year long.”

Playing 36 holes of golf in a day can be physically taxing, but a local golf pro is planning to play 108 holes in one day — equivalent of six rounds of gold — for a good cause.

Gary D. Parsons, head golf professional at Horseshoe Bay Resort’s Cap Rock Golf Facility, will play 108 holes of golf July 31 to raise money for the Southern Texas PGA Foundation and its programs.

Parsons, a former editor of The Highlander. selected Marble Falls’ St. Frederick Baptist Church Meals Program as his charity to receive 30 percent of proceeds raised during the event.

“I’m looking forward to doing this again. This will be my sixth year to participate in the STPGA fundraiser,” Parsons said. “This event gives me an opportunity to continue my support of local charities and the good work St. Fredericks does for the Marble Falls community.”

Marble Falls High School’s soccer season is currently in offseason while school’s out, but Christian Ammons is still making waves on the field.

The senior-to-be forward at MFHS recently participated in a soccer camp at Southern Methodist University, along with 300 high school soccer players from across the state.

“It was beautiful, a good experience,” Ammons said of his time in Dallas.

The soccer players worked on drills and played several games during the four-day camp before the top 22 were selected for an all-star game.

Ammons, a two-time All-State soccer player for the Mustangs, was one chosen.

He scored both his team’s goals in the game as his team won, 2-0.

“In the all-star game, everybody as good and on the same level,” he said.

MFHS soccer coach Rick Hoover described Ammons as “probably the best player at the camp.”

Granite Country Youth Soccer Association athletes will have a new field to play on when the season begins in the fall of 2017.

At the corner of Avenue K and Sixth Street, the play area will be 40 yards by 80 yards and will allow for one large field or two small fields — depending on configuration.

“There is a shortage of youth sports space across the area,” said Robert Moss, Parks and Recreation director for the City of Marble Falls. “The city has been working to add space through leases and land acquisition for a number of years now.”

Moss said they hope to have the field ready for the fall youth soccer season.

The playing surface will be Tifway 419 Bermuda, which Moss described as “the best playing surface” in Marble Falls for youth soccer.

The 2017 Mustang Football Season promises to offer a fun level of excitement, competition, and Friday night football fun as the Mustangs compete in District 26-5A! The band is working on their next award winning show, and the cheerleaders and Starlettes are ready to bring on the spirit! Season ticket renewals

Mustang Fans eager to renew their 2017 football season tickets can pick up their tickets, with payment, from July 31 – Aug. 16, from 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the MFISD Athletic Office, 2101 Mustang Drive.

The 17th annual Marble Falls Triathlon will be Sunday, July 16.

Online registration will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12. The event’s website is at www.marblefallstri.com.

The triathlon will consist of two races:

Intermediate — One-kilometer swim, 23-mile bicycle ride and 4.4-mile run.

Sprint Distance — 500-meter swim, 12-mile bike and two-mile run.

After registration, the triathlon will begin at 7 a.m. on Sunday with the Intermediate distance. It begins with men ages 34 and under; men ages 35-49; women 39 and under; men ages 50 and above and “Clydesdales” (men weighing 200 pounds or more); then women 40 and older, “Athenas” (women weighing 150 pounds or more) and Relays (Mens, Womens and Mixed).

At 7:30 a.m., the Sprint Distance begins with the same order of races as above.
