Macy Hoover of Marble Falls has been invited to travel Europe and play in multiple soccer tournaments and friendly matches as she will be representing the USA playing for the “Stars-n-Stripes” international travel team.

She started her 18-day tour of Europe Thursday July 6. The highlight of the trip will be the opportunity to represent USA in the world’s largest youth tournament in Sweden, the “Gothia Cup.”

The Gothia Cup will have over 75 nations represented and is played in front of huge crowds, in huge stadiums. Typically there are about 40,000 people in attendance to the games.

“I’m really excited about it,’’ Hoover said. “It’s going to be a long flight.’’

The tour begins in Germany where they will stay five days and play several matches against the German teams. Then they travel to Denmark for five days where they will participate in the “Denmark Cup” and have the opportunity to play some of the best teams throughout Denmark.

The grand finale of the Kids Care-A-Van Classic will be June 16-17.

It will be a send off for Spike Dykes, the Texas Tech University coach who helped organize the event to raise money to provide health care for the needy kids in the Highland Lakes.

Dykes passed April 10. He was 79.

“It’s a huge loss,’’ said Susan Bellard, a friend and wife of coach Emory Bellard. “This was going to be the last tournament.’’

Dykes, who has lived the Horseshoe Bay for almost two decades, had teamed with Bellard to start the Kids Care-A-Van Classic.

The annual golf tournament and tailgate party raises money to provide heath care for needy kids in the Highland Lakes.

More than $2 million has been raised through the endowment in 14 years.

“We had been talking about this being the last one,’’ said Becky Fox, director of development for the hospital.

“This was going to be the grand finale. We’re going to make sure it honors him well.’’

Marble Falls High School has a new interim head football coach and athletic director.

Mustang Football co-offensive coordinator Michael Birdwell was named to the athletic director and head coach position Thursday, succeeding Matt Green, who will lead to take similar duties at Llano ISD this month.

“Coach Birdwell has been an integral part in the successes experienced by the Mustangs over the past three seasons,” said MFISD superintendent Dr. Chris Allen. “With 76 days until the Mustangs’ first scrimmage, Coach Birdwell’s leadership and familiarity with the staff and the skills of our players will provide a smooth transition into the fall seasons for all of our athletic programs.”

Forty eight grade school boys mixed it up at this week's fundamental football camp at Mustang Stadium. The camp ends Thursday.

The Marble Falls defense made a big stand on its first possession of Tuesday's spring football game. The Mustangs defense held the offense from scroring on a fourth and goal by inside the five yard line.

Overall, it was a solid outing by the Mustangs defense and offense. 

Delaney Kelley, a senior golfer for the Lady Mustangs, signed with Trinity University on Thursday to play collegiate golf.

Senior Delaney Kelley closed out her Marble Falls High School golf career in record setting fashion.  She shot rounds of 83 and 73 to shoot a total of 156 breaking her two week old 36-hole school record of 160 that she fired at the district tournament.  Both scores were shot at the Golf Club of Texas in San Antonio.  Delaney’s 73 tied the 18-hole school record that was also shot by Kelsie Tackitt in 2016 and Angela Akins in 2004.  Delaney hit 10 of 14 fairways, and 15 of 18 greens in regulation to give her multiple birdie opportunities.

She did convert two of those chances for birdie to go with three bogies and 13 pars to give her the one-over par 73 total.

Delaney finished the regional tournament tied for 10th place which earned her first team All-Region honors as well.

The annual Lake Area Rods and Classics car show was Saturday in Burnet.

The Mustang girls golf team competed in the District 26 5A tournament  Monday and Tuesday at the Golf Club of Texas in San Antonio.  Delaney Kelley had a personal best 76 in the second round to qualify for the Regional tournament.  Her 160 total was good for 4th place and the second advancing medalist position. Delaney also earned First Team All-District with this top 10 finish. Kassidy Reitan broke 90, which was her goal, by shooting a second round 89 and a 186 total.  McKinley Birdwell shot a personal best 99 on Tuesday and finished at 208.

Dripping Springs won the team title after shooting a solid 654. Boerne Champion was second at 693 followed by Alamo Heights at 708.  Only the top two teams qualify for regional in golf. First advancing medalist was Annaclaire Mako of Alamo Heights at 159.  The district champion medalist was Lindsey Koppel from Dripping Springs who shot a fine 148.  Second place was Boerne Champions' Grizzaffi at 158.
