Chris Soza said it’s been a slow process for his team to learn its Slot-T offense.

“There has definitely been a learning curve, but they are working hard,’’ said Soza, who is in his first year at Medina Valley.

“It’s all I’ve ever run for 27 years of coaching,’’ he said.

It will be an intriguing matchup Friday when the Mustangs travel to Medina Valley for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff in District 26-5A play.

Besides the Panthers’ old-style offense, the game represents a long road trip for the Mustangs.

Both teams go into the game with 2-2 records and are anxious for a win after taking losses in their district openers’ last week.

Marble Falls will have their longest road trip of the season this week when they travel to Castroville to meet the Medina Valley Panthers in a District 26-5A game.

Marble Falls is coming off a 41-16 loss to San Antonio Alamo Heights at Mustang Stadium.

After the district openers, Dripping Springs and Boerne Champion look to be the cream of the crop. Boerne Champion shut out Medina Valley, 42-0, in their opener. Dripping Springs handled Kerrville Tivy, 26-7; and Lockhart won a 48-28 scoring fest against Seguin.

Alamo Heights running back Deryl Reynolds and receiver Nik Proctor both had big offensive nights to lead the Mules to a 41-16 victory over the Marble Falls Mustangs in the team’s District 26-5A opener at Mustang Stadium.

The Mules (4-0) used its speed offense to build a 14-3 first quarter lead and then in the second quarter got a key turnover from the defense to turn the game.

With the score 14-6, Marble Falls got the football after a short punt at the Alamo Heights’ 38. A 25-yard strike from quarterback Andrew Stripling to Michael Wilcox netted a quick first at the 13. On the next play Cooper Wilson tried a dive play up the middle, but the ball squirted loose and Alamo Heights recovered.

Alamo Heights comes to Marble Falls Friday night ranked No. 1 in the San Antonio Express’ Class 5A-under poll.

It’s for good reason the Mules are unbeaten in three non-district outings and averaging 34 points a game.

“They are a good, very good football team,’’ Marble Falls coach Matt Green said. “They can throw it or run it. They can do both and they are good at it. They like to throw it first.’’

The Mules start nine seniors on each side of the ball and all but one of the skill position players are seniors.

The District 26-5A opener between Marble Falls and Alamo Heights kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mustang Stadium.

“This is my first time to ever go play at Marble Falls and Mustang Stadium,’’ Alamo Heights coach Mike Norment said. “It’s nice to be playing some teams that you don’t play very often. This is a solid district, there aren’t any give me games.’’

Marble Falls girls varsity cross country team earned first place at the Liberty Hill meet last week and will compete this Saturday at Cedar Park.

The girls won with 40 points ahead of Class 6A Cedar Ridge in 71 and Leander 99 points.

The top Lady Mustang was Ambrie Lizcano with a time of 19:35. She took fourth place.

Lanie Jordan of Anderson won in 19:24.

Other Lady Mustangs were Ashley Rios in seventh at 19:38, Daijah Torns at eighth in 19:41, Jaden Johnson in ninth at 19:48, Kim Boni in 12^th at 20:01, Sydney Gibson in 13^th at 20:06, Gisela Mata in 24^th at 21:06, Allie Steward in 26^th at 21:10, Olivia Conrad in 28^th at 21:20 and Berkley Powell in 34^th at 21”37.

In the JV division the girls won with 44 points beating out Class 6A Austin Anderson and Leander.

Lewis Stephenson from Mansfield rolled in a 15-foot birdie on the final hole Sunday afternoon to win the 2016 Texas Senior Amateur Championship by two shots over John Pierce from San Antonio. Stephenson was rock solid in the final round with a 2-under-par 69 and posted 4-under 209 for the 54-hole championship at the Escondido Golf & Lake Club. It was his first statewide TGA Championship.

“I literally cannot believe it,” an emotional Stephenson said moments after the victory. A late arrival to tournament golf, the 56-year-old dentist played baseball in college. He started playing competitive golf in his late 30s. “I’ve just worked so hard over time. I know all the guys I’m playing with every time I go out, and I respect and appreciate them. People ask me how you play tournament golf, and I say, ‘You go out and get your brains beat out for about 10 years.’ But I was too stubborn to quit. I can’t believe it all came together.”

Marble Falls varsity volleyball team dropped its District 26-5A match against Boerne Champion on Tuesday night. Champion won in three straight.

The Lady Mustangs will play host to the Alamo Heights Mules on Friday at Max Copeland Gym.

The Lady Mustangs are 0-2 in district play.

The Lady Mustangs JV earned a home victory last week against Killeen Shoemaker in the team's last non-district game of the season.

Marble Falls defeated Crockett, 44-21, Friday at Burger Stadium. It was the Mustangs final non-district game of the season.

Andrew Stripling threw four touchdown passes and ran for another in the win. Keegan Deering caught five passes for 86 yards and three touchdowns and fullback Dalton Mayberry had 12 carries for 135 yards rushing and added a 25-yard reception.

Marble Falls (2-1) returns to Marble Falls Friday night for the District 26-5A opener against Alamo Heights (3-0).
