Georgetown defeats Mustangs, 45-7

Georgetown handed Marble Falls a 45-7 defeat Friday night, spoiling the Mustangs homecoming.

Junior quarterback Chandler Herman ran for two touchdowns and threw for three scores to lead th Eagles offense to 293 total yards.

Marble Falls finished with 177 yards with senior Robert Atkinson starting at quarterback for the first time.

Atkinson completed 14 of 29 passes for 120 yards. His leading receiver was Cade Cool with seven receptions for 52 yards. Eric Cauble caught five passes for 57 yards.

The Mustangs fumbled to set up Georgetown's first score and the Eagles lead 14-0 after the first quarter.

Jovonta Grimble caught 10 passes for 96 yards for the Eagles and had a 17-yard touchdown pass.

Beau Corrales had six catches for 74 yards and two scoring passes.

Marble Falls record dips to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in District 25-5A. Georgetown improved to 4-2 and 1-2.

Mustangs take on Eagles

Marble Falls (2-3, 0-2) will tangle with the Georgetown Eagles Friday night at Mustang Stadium. The game is the Mustangs homecoming game. Georgetown is 3-2 overall and 0-2 in District 25-5A. For all the details on the game please read Tuesday's HIghlander News.

Flames fall to Cardinals

Faith Academy’s trip to Shiner Friday night was a tough one. The Flames were shut out for the third time this season in their TAPPS Division III District 3 outing against the Shiner St. Paul Cardinals. St. Paul rolled to a 40-0 lead at halftime and went on to record a 47-0 victory over the Flames. Faith Academy had four interceptions. For St. Paul, it was their fourth shutout and third straight.

Marble Falls showing in Dripping Springs Friday night wasn’t pretty. The Mustangs can’t seem to get the ball rolling. Marble Falls’ inconsistency on offense and mistakes buried the Mustangs in a deep hole. Dripping Springs prevailed with a 38-10 homecoming victory. The Tigers had a big second quarter and a good answer to any rally with a big run from its bullish fullback to put the game away two snaps into the second half.

Marble Falls faces a pivotal game this week with their first trip on the road in District 25-5A. It’s Dripping Springs week and that means neighbors going head to head in a battle of two of the smallest schools in the district. Marble Falls goes into the 7:30 p.m. Friday kickoff at Tiger Stadium looking to continue its success against the Tigers.

Marble Falls drops tough district opener

District 25-5A is known as one of the best in football in the state. On Friday night, Marble Falls faced one of the toughest runners in the district when senior Matthew Snow came to town. Snow is built like a linebacker and runs with authority. The six-foot, 180-pound senior lead the Rangers to a 48-14 victory over Marble Falls Friday at Mustang Stadium.

Marble Falls’ co-offensive coordinator Mike Birdwell said this week he likes the way the Mustangs team has come together through all the distractions over the last two weeks. “The players have handled it well,’’ Birdwell said. “All that is behind us. They have worked real hard this week to be ready for district.’’

Marble Falls ready for Boerne road trip

Marble Falls turns its attention to the Boerne Greyhounds this week. The Greyhounds are unbeaten running a spread offense and a 3-4 defense. Boerne, which competes in District 14-4A Division I, has a 41-0 win over Hondo and a 28-21 victory over Medina Valley. Marble Falls matches up well this week with a team that is breaking in a new junior quarterback.
