Appeals court rules against city of Double Horn in state AG lawsuit

As city of Double Horn citizens prepare to vote in the Nov. 5 election on whether to remain incorporated, the Texas Court of Appeals, Third District released an opinion Oct. 30 that allows the state AG's office to proceed with a lawsuit aimed at dissolving the municipality.

The Texas Third District Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the State Office of the Attorney General (OAG) on Oct. 30 in the entity's effort to advance trial proceedings seeking to dissolve the city of Double Horn on allegations the municipality formed unlawfully in an effort to halt a quarry operation.

Marble Falls water customers can track use

Marble Falls city officials have launched an online water utility portal to arm customers with ways to detect and prevent water loss due to leaks or untracked usage and to promote conservation.

The WaterSmart platform available on the city's website is described as “a cloud-based, customer self-service and engagement platform.”

“(The platform is) proven to reduce costs, improve operational efficiency, and increase customer satisfaction by more than 25 percent,” stated City Manager Mike Hodge in a press release. . .

Texas Commission for Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has scheduled a Hearing on the proposed WMP for October 24, 2019 at 7:00pm at TCEQ Headquarters, 12100 Park 35 Circle Building E, Room 201S, Austin, Texas 78753. Comments can be sent to the clerk at this address. In the first informal part of the hearing, you may ask questions, but if you want your questions to be part of the official record, you may submit oral or written questions and/or concerns in the second part of the hearing.

In 26 years, volunteer and electrician Terry Evans has seen several versions of Walkway of Lights in Lakeside Park on Lake Marble Falls.

“It's changed quite a bit,” said Evans, who has witnessed everything from lighted sculptures washed away in a flood to the display's transition from incandescent to LED lighting.

Conditions keep burn bans on in Burnet and Llano counties

The question of a burn ban wasn’t included on Tuesday’s Llano County Commissioners Court meeting agenda, but that makes little difference in the ban itself. The ban remains in effect until either the court changes it, or County Judge Ron Cunningham declares the need for a burn ban over.

That seems unlikely to happen soon . . . .

Los Escondidos fights city of Marble Falls annexation

Tom Bornschein, a resident of Los Escondidos just outside the Marble Falls city limits, attempted to make a case Oct. 15 against the city council potentially voting in the future to annex his neighborhood.

Landowners who live on Los Escondidos Street stood toe-to-toe Oct. 15 with Marble Falls City Council members to push back on impending plans to annex the neighborhood, which is primarily a strip of land bordering Lake Marble Falls.

Highland Lakes Crisis Network reflects on year of flood recovery

Members of the Highland Lakes Crisis Network coordinated their third house blessing on Sept. 17 for October 2018 flood survivors with the most recent being Patty and Charles Hundley, who live on Lakeshore Drive in Marble Falls. HLCN has done several more since as well as provided other flood recovery assistance with the assistance of Catholic Charities, United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), St. John's Catholic Church, Austin Disaster Relief Network (ADRN), Burnet County Flood Relief Fund, Community Resource Center, First Baptist Church of Marble Falls and First Baptist Church of Kingsland.

October 16th marked one year since the Highland Lakes Floods of 2018.

We celebrated ‘House Blessings’ this week with two individuals as they were officially welcomed back home after completion of repairs from flood damage.

This makes five Home Blessings and one Vehicle Blessing we have completed in the last couple of months.

LCRA declines Marble Falls lake desilt request

LCRA turned down a request by the city of Marble Falls to dredge Lake Marble Falls, citing reasons. The story is on page 2A in the Friday, Oct. 18 issue of The Highlander.

Lower Colorado River Authority officials denied a request from the city of Marble Falls to desilt Lake Marble Falls, adding the waterway was not created for water supply storage nor lake recreation but for flood control and power generation.

LCRA General Manager Phil Wilson responded in a letter dated Oct 10. to a city council-generated request for dredging on the waterway which runs primarily through the south side of the community.
