Social and emotional education and academic growth rose to the top of the list of focuses for all principals across Marble Falls Independent School District for the 2019-2020 school year.

The principals presented their individual campus improvement plans to the board of trustees during the regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Marble Falls Independent School District Pre-K students joined together to celebrate Mexican culture on Oct. 10 with a performance of “De Colores” while dressed in traditional garbs. Also, first graders performed a Guatemalan dance to “Yo Le Canto A Guatemala” at the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration which was held at Marble Falls Middle School. Sales tax revenue for the city of Marble Falls continued to climb in October as all six taxing municipalities in Burnet County reported growth compared to last year, with four cities (Marble Falls, Burnet, Granite Shoals and Bertram) reporting double digit percentage gains.

Early voting for the Nov. 5 constitutional amendment election in both Burnet and Llano counties begins Monday, Oct. 21, and continues through Friday, Nov. 1.

A male juvenile will face a possible assault charge, following an attack on another student, captured on video and shared on social media, according to Marble Falls police. Marble Falls Independent School District officials also responded with a letter to parents and communities addressing the safety of students in the classroom.

The incident was reported the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 4 at the Marble Falls High School campus, 2101 Mustang Drive.

An upcoming public forum will feature a debate among group representatives at odds over the impact and proliferation of the mining industry in the Hill Country.

The event – sponsored by the Austin American Statesman (AAS) and KVUE TV Austin – is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7 at the Riverbend Conference Center, 708 1st St. in Marble Falls.

Sulcata tortoises are not indigenous to the Highland Lakes — they are more common to the southern Sahara desert and the savannas of Africa. However, someone forgot to tell that to one beautiful specimen who paid a visit to The Highlander office Wednesday, Oct. 2.
