On Saturday, June 9, at approximately 4:47 p.m., Texas Department of Public Safety responded to a crash on Texas 71 close to the Travis/Blanco County line, in which 17-year-old Marble Falls High School senior Maribel Enriquez was seriously injured and transported to St. David's Hospital; Enriquez was later pronounced dead at the hospital. 

According to a statement issued by DPS Sergeant Ryan Howard, Enriquez was traveling eastbound in a Ford Mustang when her slick rear tires caused her to lose control and slide across multiple lanes of traffic into the path of a Mercedez-Benz, occupied by passenger Preben Hammer, 71, of Austin, who died at the scene, and his wife, 68-year-old Alice Hammer of Austin, who was later pronounced dead at St. David's Hospital. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz and the passenger in the Ford Mustang were transported to St. David's Hospital, both in critical condition.

Judge sentences Ochoa Avalos to 12 years in prison on jury recommendation

A Burnet County jury needed less than an hour of deliberation before returning a guilty verdict against a Marble Falls man accused of indecency with a child by sexual contact.

The 12th Annual Paint the Town event is still under way in Marble Falls with announcement of the juried winners set for the ticketed VIP Reception this evening from 6:30-9 p.m. at Lakeside Pavilion, 307 Buena Vista Drive.

Paint the Town Family Day is tomorrow, Saturday, May 5, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., with the big Quick Draw event opening at 10 a.m. downtown.

A Marichias Band will be performing at noon, when judges will announce the winners of the contest.

Family Day activities at Lakeside Pavilion will include children's painting stations and children's awards will be presented at 1:30 p.m.

Gallery art sales and demonstrations also will be going on at the pavilion and food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Marble Falls will welcome nationally recognized artists to participate in the 12th annual Paint The Town during the week of April 29-May 5.

Artists will be arriving Sunday for week-long art activities that will include lectures, demonstrations, and opportunities to purchase top quality art. One great opportunity to see them at work will be Tuesday, May 1, when they will be working at Candlelight Ranch, 6408 Muleshoe Bend Trail, east of Marble Falls and south of Ranch to Market Road 1431. Ranch gates 9-7 will be open for public entrance.

“Come to the Lakeside Pavilion on Thursday, May 3, thru Saturday, May 5, to enjoy paintings of our beautiful Hill Country,” said Betsy Walker, Highland Lakes Creative Arts (HLCA) president. “And, there are still opportunities to be included in the VIP reception on Friday, May 4.”

April showers have never dampened the Marble Falls Children's Day Celebration from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 21, will be no exception.

“Just wear a jacket if it's cool and bring a poncho or umbrella in case it rains a little,” said Ely Banuet Rodriguez, founder and president. “We've seen it before and all the games and food and fun will go on in Johnson Park anyway on Saturday.

“If it showers, don't scurry away. Just stay. The sun will come out.”

The weather is warm and flowers are blooming, but heading into the great out of doors warrants caution about snakes and wildlife.

Already this year in Burnet County, two people have been bitten by rattlesnakes and now rabies alerts are being raised.

Meadowlakes was the first city in the area to report positive tests for rabies on skunks in the city limits and reports have followed on animals contained in Marble Falls and Burnet.

In 2018 Burnet County has risen already into the 7-10 rabies case category of the Texas Department of State Health Services (TSHS), including skunks, foxes, a raccoon and even a cat in various parts of the county.

The animal in Marble Falls was captured March 22 in the 800 block of Avenue F and in Burnet one was found on John Hoover Parkway March 27. In Meadowlakes they were found in several locations, including Hidden Falls Golf Course.

“Children's Day comes straight out of the heart of Texas,” said Ely Banuet Rodriguez, founder and president of the full day of free entertainment, fun and food for children from pre-kindergartenage-middle school held each spring in Marble Falls.

The 18th annual Children's Day on April 21, again will fill Johnson Park, the city's Lone Star Legacy Park at 230 Ave J, with the joyful sound of children having safe and free family fun from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

That doesn't happen without support and sponsors to assist more than 400 volunteers with the event are welcome. Likewise, community organizations, schools, churches, businesses and individuals are welcomed into the fold to provide the fun-filled day.
