The Marble Falls Police Department (MFPD) will welcome the community to the Grand Opening of the Marble Falls Public Safety Facility at 606 Avenue N on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

“We will begin to greet people at noon,” said police chief Mark Whitacre. “After a brief ceremony, there will be an open house until 3:30 p.m. for the general public to see the new faciltiy for our department and for Marble Falls Municipal Court.

“We are excited and there is a flurry of people right now, working for the final inspection of the elevator, implementing the new communications system and phone system. Patrol offices will have to be moved and records.

For many years, Horseshoe Bay resident Dorothy Crockett has chronicled the comings and goings of her neighbors as part of her "Horseshoe Bay Happenings" column for The Highlander every Friday.

What many people may not realize, however, is Crockett helped found the Texas Federation of Republican Women in 1955 as well as the predecessor club to the Star Republican Women of Llano County in 1975.

Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11, is observed as a holiday by the U.S. Postal Service.

Friday, Nov. 10, however is a holiday for many other offices, including the federal government.

Among Burnet County cities, only Horseshoe Bay and Bertram city staff will be at work.

All county offices will be obsereve a Friday holiday, as well as city offices in Marble Falls, Granite Shoals, Cottonwood Shores and Burnet. Highland Haven regularly closes on Fridays.

It will be worth a call to your local bank before driving to make a transaction.

Although the Federal Reserve Banks close for Saturday holidays and on Mondays following Sunday holidays, individual local banks may vary. IBC Bank, Prosperity Banks FirstUnited and First State Bank & Trust, for example, will be closed Saturday.

The Marble Falls branch of Compass Bank and Security State Bank & Trust, that do not have regular Saturday hours, will be open Friday.

Veterans Day again will be celebrated by Falls on the Colorado Museum (FOCM) in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Marble Falls but a month-long exhibit honoring veterans is opening at the museum at 2001 Broadway Street.

At the Veterans Day program at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, the warhorse Reckless and the Bluebonnet Chorale will return to add to the recognition of all U.S. military veterans.

Marine Staff Sgt. Reckless' proxy, Dixie, commemorates one of the greatest Marine heroes of the Korean War. The original Sgt. Reckless was a chestnut horse that carried needed ammunition to the Fifth Marines during a five-day battle.

This year, Veterans Day, a national holiday celebrated each Nov. 11, falls on a Saturday.

To honor local veterans while students are in school, Marble Falls ISD campuses have scheduled special Veterans Day celebrations this Friday, Nov. 10

The Veterans Day celebrations help deepen students’ civic understanding that Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor all those who served honorably in the United States Military — both in wartime or peacetime.

Veterans Day is largely intended to thank living veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served—not only those who died — have sacrificed and done their duty.

Thursday, Nov. 9, is the big day for First Baptist Christian School students to pack their shoe boxes full of presents for Operation Christmas Child (OCC).

It is a reminder that anyone can become a part of the Samaritan’s Purse ministry to spread the a message of love with shoeboxes full of small gifts and a gospel.

The boxes are shipped to underprivileged children all over the world who may never have received a Christmas gift.

All Highland Lakes churches and schools are invited to participate. Last year, 28 local churches participated. The final count was 2,268 shoeboxes filled and donated. Of those, 428 were given by First Baptist Church, 113 by First Baptist Christian School and 1,727 boxes given by 27 other congregations.

“We are hoping this year’s count will be even more,” said Beverly Whittlesey, who works with the program.

Friday, Nov. 3, is another Marble Falls First Friday Art Walk and artists of the Highland Arts Guild Gallery will greet visitors to their Fall Show & Sale Preview as the masters and their subjects from artistic annals.

Tour the gallery at 318 Main Street with the likes of Rosie the Riveter, Vincent Willem van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa or Johannes Vermeer's Girl with the Pearl Earring. Or, meet them along Main Street when they take a stroll. But look closely to identify them, you may find they are keeping up with the times and fashion.

In addition to new art, visitors can enjoy refreshments while browsing extra works of art, a Christmas gift table and a red tag sale on some of the artist's gallery pieces.

Thrill-seekers of all shapes, sizes, and ages will get a chance to participate in the craziest — and muddiest — event in the world, when the Rugged Maniac 5K Obstacle Race (powered by Men’s Health) hits Burnet with 25 adrenaline-pumping obstacles and a day-long party for all racers and spectators on Nov. 4.

This year participants will have the opportunity to conquer 30 events strategically placed throughout the U.S. and Canada. Burnet will host the wild event packed with water slides, trampolines, fire jumps, and much more for the third straight year.

Tickets, available online at ruggedmaniac.com, start at $49 for advance registrants and increase by $10 every two months, ending at $100 on the day of the event.

Students and military personnel with valid identification receive a $10 discount.

“Get your PINK on, Marble Falls.”

That is the message from Marble Falls Fire Rescue for a breast cancer awareness event Thursday, Oct. 26.

“Our pink fire truck program escort members of the community affected by breast cancer to the big event at Old Oak Square on Main Street,” Marble Falls Fire Chief Russel Sander said. “We hope everyone will wear ping and join us from 4-6 p.m. for pink cupcakes and cookies and pink lemonade.”

A commemorative photo of what the department wants to be a sea of pink will be taken from atop a ladder truck.

“We are calling on all of Marble Falls to join us,” said Sander.

Local firemen, including members of Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Department have been sporting pink logos on special uniform shirts to promote the event.

Sander told the Marble Falls City Council he expected to see them in the crowd.

A shred service for personal records will be a feature of the Granite Shoals Fall Clean Up Day again this Saturday, Oct. 21, on the municipal complex, 2221 North Phillips Ranch Road.

Citizens will find rows of roll-off dumpsters for almost any kind of refuse, except construction materials, rocks and masonry materials, liquids, batteries, and dead animals.

Among items accepted are appliances without Freon, furniture, porcelain fixtures, scrap metal and tires without rims. A small fee is charged for tires.

Branches should be bundled and leaves and trash should be bagged.

Condor Services will be there from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. with the ShredMobile for secure shredding of documents with sensitive personal information including information recorded on CDs, DVDs or cassette tapes. The material should be delivered in boxes with notebooks, binders and metal fasteners removed.
