Shops and galleries on Marble Falls Main Street will host First Friday Art Walk Friday, Aug. 4, and, on the same night, a winner is to be chosen in logo contest organizers are sponsoring.

Even visitors on a getaway weekend for Highland Lakes fun in the sun can appreciate stepping out of the heat 5-8 p.m. to enjoy refreshments and seeing something new. The town has three galleries devoted strictly to art—Galleries on Pecan Creek in Old Oak Square, Marta Stafford Fine Art and the Highland Arts Guild Gallery—but art and handmade items line the walls of downtown gift stores staying open late as well.

“Some people were surprised to find so much art,” said Ruth Peterson, proprietor of Trendz at 203 Main Street. “We served refreshments for the first two events and we will again Aug. 4.”

A new edition of Coffee with the Mayor will be sponsored by the City of Marble Falls from 8-9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4.

This time, the setting will be Falls on the Colorado Museum in the historic granite schoolhouse at 2001 Broadway Street.

The public is invited to share thoughts and ideas about new projects in the city.

In this case, it also will be an opportunity to stroll through exhibits about the history of town, including those about four influential early residents created for Marble Falls Founders Day, celebrated July 8. Another new exhibit features “Rockie,” a 700-year-old bison relic, discovered on Rocky Creek in Burnet County, and the subject of a fund-raising campaign to reassemble the full skeleton.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity to meet one-on-one with our residents and learn about issues that are important to them,” said Packer.

The free event is an informal come-and-go session and does not require reservations.

Granite Shoals citizens will have a chance to learn about their road repairs and to make themselves heard at a Town Hall Meeting for Road Improvement Bond Update at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 29.

There is a lot to learn. Since Feb. 15, when hopes evaporated for a 55 percent match to $3 million in voter-approved road bonds, few council meetings have gone by without discussion of new surveys, new engineering study and, inevitable, cutbacks in the original plan to completely restore the three main north-south traffic arteries in the city.

The council is determined to go back to voters to affirm approval of a $3 million, rather than $6 million, project.

The annual Double Horn – Rockvale Reunion will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at the Church of Christ, 711 Broadway Street in Marble Falls.

The two communities that grew up southeast of Marble Falls, beginning in the 1850's, first thrived and then diminished over the decades, but a sense of community brings about 100 residents, old and new, together each year.

The surviving Double Horn School House was a longtime gathering place, but over the years air conditioning and ease of access have brought it to town.

“People just bring a covered dish and we all share lunch and memories,” said Jean Denniston Eades, a descendant of an early Rockvale family.

Thirteen families settled the neighbor communities, but residents and friends from any age are welcome.

A hilarious musical adaptation of the seminal hit film with an upbeat score by the legendary Dolly Parton. “9 to 5” follows three female co-workers pushed to the boiling point with their sexist and egotistical boss.

Together these unlikely partners conspire to take control of the office and achieve the ultimate revenge. “9 to 5” is a jubilant musical about friendship and getting ahead in the Rolodex era of the late 1970s.

The 61st Annual Marble Falls Rodeo will be going on tonight, Friday, July 14, and tomorrow, July 15, culminating with a performance by Nashville recording artist Genevieve Allen.

Historic Main Street in Marble Falls will be scene of the 10 a.m. Rodeo Parade Saturday.

The Texas Historical Commission's (THC) Certified Local Government (CLG) Program will conduct a free training in Burnet Thursday, Aug. 3, from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
It will take place at the The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Building, 607 North Vandeever Street, Burnet, and will be hosted by THC staff and members of the Burnet County Historical Commission.
The training will focus on the benefits of the CLG Program, including grant opportunities, historic resources surveys, the benefits of designating properties to the National Register of Historic Places, including federal and state tax credits, and how CLGs can improve communication with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) on projects that impact historic resources.
Admission is free, but registration is required. Lunch and refreshments are provided by Burnet County Historical Commission. The training is open to current and potential CLGs, county historical commissions, and Main Street Communities.

Summer in Texas typically brings hot, dry weather and an increased risk for wildfire. In order to help residents learn how to reduce their wildfire risk, a Firewise presentation is being offered by the Texas A&M Forest Service on Saturday, July 15.

The presentation is sponsored by Burnet County Emergency Services District No. 6 and Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Department (MFAVFD). The public is invited.

The presentation is being held in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church (1101 Bluebonnet Drive) in Marble Falls starting at 10 a.m. and continuing until noon.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will present plans and proposals for development of facilities and recreational use areas at the Inks Lake State Park complex during a public meeting Thursday, July 13. The public is invited to attend and provide comment on the plans, which will affect Inks Lake State Park, nearby Longhorn Cavern State Park, and the road between the two, historic Park Road 4.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the City of Burnet Community Center, 1601 South Water St., Burnet.

Fireworks and celebrantions on the Highland Lakes began with the Blue Lake Estates parade and fireworks Saturday, July 1,  and grew to a crescendo Tuesday night July 4.

Also, on Saturday, the annual Flights of Fancy event of the Highland Lakes Flyers model airplane club filled the air above Hank Nilsen Model Aircraft Field (see photos on Facebook: http://bit.ly/2tiwqvB ) and the Miss Aqua Boom Pageant filled the Kingsland Community Center.

Parades went on for family and friends in Spicewood, Meadowlakes and Highland Haven, Bertram, Briggs, Horseshoe Bay and at the Kingsland Aqua Boom. They even took to the water in Horseshoe Bay and Kingland. The grand finale was fireworks in Marble Falls, Horseshoe Bay, Briggs, Bertram and Kingsland, with all three shows visible to residents with the right vantage point around the lakes.
