Readers who love to know their favorite authors will get the chance during the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Marble Falls Library at its 101 Main Street Home, going on Monday-Friday, Oct. 2-6.

Wednesday is Authors Day, and an even dozen Central Texas writers will be in Marble Falls to chat with patrons, sign and sell copies of their books from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Authors are scheduled in three groups:

• 10 a.m.-noon—Ben Rehder, Helen Fanick, Monte Akers and Ed Mapel

• 1-3 p.m.--Dennis Blocker, WC Jameson, Marcia Kaylakie, Susan Rogers Cooper

• 3-5 p.m.--Jane Knapik, Donna Ingham, Dennis Blocker, Karen MacInerney

Historians like Knapik and Akers are balanced by cultural investigators like Jameson and Ingham and mystery writers readers love such as Susan Rogers and Helen Fanick.

National Night Out (NNO) will be celebrated in Marble Falls and Granite Shoals on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

The annual community-building campaign promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.

Locally that national goal is taken up a notch with other first responders taking part in the night of family fun.

The Marble Falls Police Department (MFPD) will conduct their event from 5-7 p.m. on the 200 block of Main Street where the police station is located.

Vendors and sidewalk sales will be found on the street, but also free food, music, bounce houses for kids and more. It is a chance families and neighbors to visit with first responders in a casual setting.

Marble Falls High School (MFHS) Student Council members are hard at work preparing for this year’s Homecoming scheduled for Sept. 25–29 and MFHS ex-students are planning their own homecoming event Sept. 30--the All School Reunion-- including the 50th Anniversary of the Class of 1967.

High school students will be building the Homecoming excitement with a week of in-school spirit days leading up to the Homecoming ceremonies and the football game against Medina Valley, Friday, Sept. 29.

Everyone is invited to participate in the Homecoming Parade, Bon Fire and Pep Rally on Thursday Sept. 28, and Friday night pre-game and halftime celebrations.

Gov. Gregg Abbott, in addition to his proclamation of Oct. 1-7 as Power Up Your Library Week in Texas, officially recognized the 20th Anniversary of the Marble Falls Public Library in its home at 101 Main Street.

The library will be closed Sept. 21-29 for new renovations and it will reopen to the flurry of preparations for a week of 20th anniversary events.

“We are super excited,” said library director Amanda Rose. “Every day from Monday, Oct. 2 through Friday, Oct. 6, something special will be going on inside the library.

That first day will be Children's Day.

“Lollypop the Clown will put on magic shows and lead two parades through the library, one for pre-schoolers, and one after school for older kids,”said Rose.

The Hill Country Humane Society (HCHS) is busy putting the finishing touches on its second annual Wags & Whiskers Gala, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23, from 6-10 p.m.

Sponsorship opportunities and tickets priced at $50 each are still available to the public by calling HCHS directly at 512-793-5463.

The gala will take place at the Hill Country Hall, 15675 Texas 29, Buchanan Dam. Festivities will include dinner by Spyke’s Bar-B-Que of Kingsland, dancing to the sounds of the Instigators Band, silent auction items, and door prizes.

Hill Country residents are joining together in Marble Falls today to raise money to fight cancer as the annual Relay for Life fundraiser that kicks off at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, Sept. 16, at Johnson Park, 230 Ave. J.

Relay for Life will continue until midnight. It is a team fundraising event where team members take turns walking around a track or designated path. At least one participant keeps on the track at all times to fulfill pledges for funds for the American Cancer Society made in the months leading up to the event.

A brief but solemn ceremony will take place Monday, Sept. 11, in Sandy Harbor--the toning of a bell cast from metal from the World Trade Center.

Members of the Sandy Harbor Volunteer Fire Department (SHVFD) will welcome their neighbors at 9:45 a.m. for a ceremony that will end with the toning of the bell at 9:46 a.m.

The bell was donated by a supporter of the SHVFD whose cousin, a New York firefighter, lost is life in the towers' collapse.

"As first responders, our volunteers want to recognize the many sacrifices made by emergency personnel and so many others on this tragic day," said Douglas Hindelang of the department. "Please feel free to join us for a short period of reflection and prayer.

The SHVFD is located at 203 Granite Shoals Drive in Horseshoe Bay.

H-E-B partners (employees) in Marble Falls served up a homemade lunch for the firefighters and emergency medical personnel at the Marble Falls fire station on Friday, Sept. 8, as part of H-E-B’s company-wide Helping Heroes program.

No plans this weekend? The Highland Lakes Squadron Commemorative Air Force (CAF) can help with that!

This Saturday, Sept. 9, is the 26th anniversary of the Bluebonnet CAF Highland Lakes Airsho, sponsored by the City of Burnet, at the Burnet Municipal Airport. It will be full day of excitement with the gates opening at 9 a.m. for spectators to look at all the displays. The air show will begin at noon.

One Saturday each year, the Spicewood Volunteer Fire Department and EMS actually looks forward to seeing a lot of wrecks.

That day will be this Saturday, Sept. 9, when at the 26th annual Spicewood Destruction Derby is held on the grounds behind the fire department, 9805 Texas 71 East, Spicewood. Proceeds from this event benefit the fire department and emergency medical service.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with a live band performing at 4:30 p.m. The races will start at 6 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Seating is on a first-come basis, and coolers, glass bottles and pets are not allowed. Food, drinks and beer will be available for sale from concessions.
