Article Image Alt Text

Adult soapboxers are eager race in vehicles they have built themselves to see which one will attain ultimate bragging rights.

The Ninth Annual Marble Falls Soapbox Classic will take place June 15-17.

The historic downtown district of Marble Falls will be filled with racing, live music, vendors and excitement.

"We are thrilled about the racing changes made to the Derby event the last few years." said event producer, Shannon Heep. "We have added more racing with new divisions and brackets.”

Soapbox Derby Spectators can enjoy the races at the Grand Bank Grandstands: shade covered bleachers on the 3rd street race track. Lawn chairs and small shade tents are also welcomed on the 3rd street track. Organizers ask that no coolers be brought. Parking is available in the parking lot at 2nd street and Ave J (enter from 2nd street.)

Michelle Lindholm of Tailgate BBQ offers a sample of her cooked ribs. Like most competitors there, she declined to unveil any of her “secret ingredients.” Lindholm was among the many who competed in the 24th annual Lone Star Barbecue State Championship Cookoff and 47th annual Howdy-Roo Chili Cookoff this weekend at Johnson Park.

The 12th Annual Paint the Town event came to a close this weekend with the announcement of the main Paint Out winners Friday night and Quick Draw winners on Saturday.

Artists were observed painting en plein air (in open air rather than in the studio) all around Marble Falls and the surrounding area throughout the week. They took time to conduct workshops and brought works for exhibit and purchase at the Lakeside Pavilion gallery exhibit.

The Best of Show winner was Randall Cogburn of Rosharon with an oil painting of the Jolly Roger Boat House in Fall Creek Park and the Artists Choice Award went to and Mike Simpson of Montrose, Colo.

Lee Ricks of Pleasanton won first place with a watercolor scene of the chuck wagon exhibited at Candlelight Ranch. Second place went to Linda Dumont of Austin for an interior scene of Choccolattes in oils.

Saturday is Drug Take Back Day

Article Image Alt Text

This Saturday, April 28, is the day to eliminate all those unused prescription medications from around the house.

In conjunction with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) National Drug Take Back program, the Marble Falls Police Department, Burnet County Sheriff's Office and an area pharmacy will host locations where people can anonymously dispose of outdated and unused prescription drugs.

No questions or requests for identification will be made, and medication labels will not be read. Syringes/needles, "sharps," and scalpels, however cannot be accepted.

“Unused prescriptions sometimes seem like 'fair game' to kids who might ingest them or people from out of the household who might take them for illegal consumption,” said Marble Falls Police Chief Mark Whitaker. “On Saturday, someone will be on hand from 10 a.m.-2p.m. at the Public Safety Facility (606 Avenue N, Marble Falls) to man a drop-off box in the lobby.”
